YADCT: Canon G5 or Canon 10D

Tough decision... I have no experience with SLR, but I want too...

On the other hand, I think I would really miss the "real time" LCD on the point and shoot cameras...

I guess this is really a decision between SLR and Regular...

Get the Canon Digital REbel Cheaper than the D10 and is an SLR

If you want an dSLR to start with, go with the 300D. I would not put the money into a G5, though. It is the same as the G3, but with an extra MP and balck paint. The G3 will be cheaper, and the image will have less noise.
