Here's the deal. I'm 26, and have never had an alcoholic drink in all my life... not a sip, nothing. (don't worry you pagan bastards, it's not a religious thing :p) I was thinking I want to give it a shot, but don't know where to start, here are a couple points:

1. I have no interest in getting drunk - so flavor is much more important than quantity to price ratio.
2. I'm nerdy enough to actually try to research this before dinking, and found that some lager beers are pretty carbonated - I want to minimize this or avoid it if possible. I hardly ever drink soda because I can't stand carbination.
3. I was thinking of trying NEwscastle Brown Ale, because I like the soccer club - would this be a huge mistake??

I know the ATOTers love thier  so help a nub out!

(In reality I know I'd probably like fruity girly drinks best, but if I'm gonna drink I might as well do it right)

Well, just go to your nearest bar and order one of everything.

Try this:

1. Michelob Ultra
2. Amaretto Sour (mixed drink)
3. Corona Extra

For your first try I would not go past that in a single night.

It makes absolutely no difference. :p Especially since an Amaretto Sour is a fairly weak drink.

He should get himself an order of spicy buffalo wings to eat while drinking. Should make them taste that much more refreshing.

I know it's pretty weak, but this guy has never had an alcoholic drink in his life.

Try to get non-rail liquor above all else...don't need to splurge, but Aristocrat and Burnetts are horrible, and bars use them frequently (where I've been) as rail liquors

White/Blacks Russians are good if you use quality ingredients (Van Gogh Melon is my current vodka choice)

I love margaritas...but only mexican restaurants can make then right

Long Island Iced Tea:D;)

If you are looking for a weak drink (a la Amaretto Sour) try a Blue Motorcycle...

For somebody that has never drank, you'll want to steer clear of beer. It's not something you just grab off the shelf and instantly enjoy.

You'll want to stick to fruitier/sweeter things that can mask most of alcohol taste.

Vodka & Cranberry Juice
Pineapple rum (Malibu) & orange juice
Alabama Slammers
Appletini's
Cosmo's

Or the whole "flavored malt beverages" linuep of Smirnoff Ice, Mikes Hard Lemonade, ect. But those can leave you feeling like crap in a hurry. Some people just can't handle malt liquor well, myself being one of them. They are like an instant hang over for me.

Yes but extremely carbonated.

If you have never had a drink in your life, maybe a dark ale isnt the best idea, you might not like it, and you dont want to ruin your whole perception of dark ales right off the bat. If you want something thats tastes really good, and isnt very expensive, give Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen a try

Here!

Very crisp, light, but full of flavor. You will enjoy it.

Madouri Sour, thats usually what i order for people who have gone out drinking with me for the first time. It tastes like a green apple jolly rancher, light on alcohol.

I second vi_edit choices. and Jawo's Long Islands. If made right, LIT's are the best blend of getting the alcohols effect and it tasting good (sometimes thats a big if!!).

Beer is a bad way to "start" drinking. Newcastle will be a bit rough to start with, even though that is probably one of my top ten beers.

The malt beverages taste like wierd sprite in most cases and are strongly carbonated which you said you wanted to avoid. If you want to go that route i would reccommend Smirnoff Triple Black. Very smooth, not very carbonated, and not very sweet, overall one of my favorites on a summer afternoon, if i want to just chill.

Or if you really want to be adverturous you can go with my personal all-time favorite drink of choice: Gin and Tonic... but make sure you ask for something like a Bombay Saphire or Tanquery No. 10. most of the bottom shelf gins are not good at all. and Segram's Tonic Water (yes, even the tonic water makes a difference.

Tell us how you make out!

jus start of with some beers

(dont go for bud that will ruin everything and you'll never drink again)

if you dont like the taste of beer/larger/guiness , why not try the bottled alcopop's like smirnoff ice and bacardi breezers etc, yeah they are abit girly but they taste pretty good (smirnoff ice actually tastes just like lemonade, you can just to say taste the 5% alcohol)

and usually, well here anyway, they always do massive deals on bottles like 3 for £5 or something, so wether your a girl or a big muscular jock they all can be seen drinking from bottles coz theyre so cheap.

dont drink yourself in to the ground though, id just go easy and drink enough to get merry. dont go balls out and end up legless/vomiting in a gutter

vodka and redbull is nice, though probably not something to drink regular
vodka and coke is horrid

double malibu and cranberry is a very nice drink, the cranberry hides the taste of the alcohol very well.

You're telling a first time beer drinker to drink Mic ultra?? OP, you *probably* aren't going to like beer for the first few times that you try it, so I'd at least go with a good beer heh.

/edit if you aren't settled on drinking beer tonight, why not try some other drinks, Long Island Iced Tea's are pretty tasty, but sometimes pretty strong (a bar in town gives you a 16 oz cup of top shelf liquor with a drop or two of coke heh) If you like chocolate milk, white russians (ala the dude) are pretty tasty in my opinion, but not a lot of bars carry the ingredients (well not a lot of college bars, if you go some place reasonably nice, they'll probably have the ingredients) as far as shots go you could get a purple hooter (pretty sweet tasting, and not a lot of alcohol content comparatively) I mean don't slam them all night b/c you won't feel too well afterwards heh.

Start off with a beer, like a Corono or Heineken (if you want something lighter, Amstel Light).
Work your way up to some mixed drinks, like Jack and Coke (or any variant, Captain Coke, Henney Coke, etc.).
If you'd rather do cocktails, Amaretto Sour, LIT's, Margarita's, Cosmo's, Mudslides will do.
If you wanna get trashed real fast, a Bacardi 151 on an empty stomach is all you need ;)

I suggest getting at least slightly buzzed for a more "enlightening" experience.

All in moderation! All you have to worry about. Only time I get sick from liquor is if I drink have the bottle, don't know how many shots that's equiv. to.

I suggest the buttery nipple for first timers.

Margarita or long island ice tea.

Btw, there is no right/wrong. You can drink wine coolers for all I care.

Some of the fruity tropical drinks are pretty good for beginners as well.

MaiTai (differnt variations, most use pineapple juice)
Pina Colada (pineapple and coconut)
Daquri (different flavors)
