Well, I just put the down payment on one. It was a dealer / loaner car and has a mere 6,000 miles on it, 2.0L turbo with a couple upgrade packages. I won't get it until probably next week, as I have school/work at all times when the dealer is open.

I am quite excited, as I haven't had a car for close to 8 months, and that car was a 96 Taurus wagon I'd had since high school.

Anyone else have an 06 Passat, or know anything about them?

Yes, but I got just under 7k off of it. And it was driven by the head maintenance lady at the dealership for around 4k of those miles. And it still has full warranty, and I'm thinking about getting the extended one just in case.

It's true, but at least you have another 44,000 miles before crap breaking comes out of your pocket :). I hope you enjoy it, I <3 my 02 Passat

Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself. Personally, I wouldn't ever buy a loaner.

Yeah I spose it does sound like that, but I'm reasonably happy with it. Test drove it a couple times (even got it stuck in a snowbank ) and put it through its paces.

So what kind of stuff should I watch out for as far as it having been abused?

My wife and I own a 2003 Nissan Maxima SE and a 2006 Lexus IS250. She owned a VW Golf when I met her. It was a complete pile of junk and I vowed I would never buy another VW so long as I lived. Her half sister owned a Jetta with equal experiences and resulting opinion of VW cars. Oh, and a good friend of mine also had a similar experience with a VW Jetta he bought new. 3 transmissions in 70k miles...yeah, never again were his words. He replaced that car with a Honda Accord which he put over 140k miles on and owns a 2005 Acura TL now.

Good luck with yours though.

Almost dealer/leased/loaner/rental cars are driven like they are stolen.

Not that I'VE ever done anything like that.....

VW is one of the worst brands for reliability. $7k off something that has had it's best miles taken off of it isn't a good deal.

yea my 2000 GTI VR6 is going strong at 123K miles. My cousin's 2003 GTI 1.8T is running as good as new at 68K miles. My friend's 1998 Jetta VR6 hasnt had any serious problems in ~200K miles. My other friend just got a 06 Passat and loves it. My gf's sister got a preowned 2004 Jetta GLI and had only one problem with the throttle body so far, which was replaced for free under VW's CPO warranty....

yea there are two sides to every story

OK update: I called the sales guy on the way home... my car was NOT a loaner, it was used by the lady there ONLY... so I'm relieved at that. The other one I looked at, slightly darker gray with tint and pinstripes, was the loaner.

I kinda got a little scared, I hadn't thought about people beating the sh!t out of it... whew.
