I need to change my motor mounts on my Volvo 940 Turbo. Anyone ever done this before? Not on my car, but any car.
I hear it's a pretty simple job.
Any tips?

Good luck..

Well there are two motor mounts and a third transmission/motor mount. I'm just going to replace the two side motor mounts for now.

pretty simple. place a piece of wood under the oil pan and lift it *slightly* with a jack. unbolt old mount, install new mount. the only hard part may be getting access to your mounts. usually only involves 3 nuts and bolts or so, two holding mount to frame, 1 holding mount to motor. you might as well replace all 3 while you're at it.

You'll need an engine crane, or something to hoist up the engine whilst replacing the engine mount.

Un screw one nut on top then the securing nuts for the mount, then replace the mount.

Also you are correct you have to mounts for the engine usually, a third on the tran to control the engine kick.

Make sure you keep the moter from dropping when you do it. It's kind of hard to jack it back up when it falls too much. Also don't put the jack under the oil pan to support it.

I've wondered if my mounts need to be replaced.

I've got a '99 Mountaineer and the whole vehicle seems to shake when getting above 60mph. The shaking is subtle, and new tires, rotations, alignments, balancing, etc., haven't helped. There is no shaking in the steering wheel.

I've noticed that every now and then, the vehicle shakes when started (it doesn't happen every time). Does the shaking sound like it's related to the engine mounts?

Could be, but when going over 60 you wheel bearings could be shot. Although with the latter I do believe the result would be a shaking steering wheel.

Use a torch and check for wear around the engine mount/bush.

Well, my car doesn't shake when driving. Just when idling. When idling, the steering wheel shakes pretty bad. The engine mounts are definately shot.

if your car is auto, you can put it in drive, press the brakes, and lightly gas it at the same time. with a bad mount you can see the motor lift upward, much more so than it normally should.

Also if you have bad mounts after hitting the gas hard from leaving a light or stop sign and letting off quickly a loud thud can be heard as well.

Only if the engine mount has lost all of its hydraulic fluid.

he means flashlight, not (american word) torch! don't use a torch, or you really will have problems. ;)
