Car: 1996 Mistubishi Galant S (97000 miles), Automatic Transmission

What happenned: This morning the transmission slipped out of gear, raced to 8000RPM, hit, then car stalled and stopped.

Problem: Car will not respond to gear shifter, absolutely NO RESPONSE at all. Check Engine light came on, transmission fluid is pink/full. Can (physically) push the car with it in Reverse, drive, 2nd, or Low drive engaged. Parking gear works.

Tried: Pushing the car in reverse to see if it engages, tried shifting from reverse to drive a few times fast, no response at all.

It's like the gear shifter doesnt even exist, rear parking lights come on in Reverse, but no response whatsoever.

Any ideas? Is the transmission shot..? I've seen transmissions die before, but they always show some sign of movement when you shift, this car does absolutely NOTHING.

🙁

Yes - your transminssion is gone. I *might* be something easy, but I highly doubt it.

Sorry for the bad news. 🙁

Yeah, but it acts like it's in neutral no matter what gear it is set to. Can a transmission just "die" without any response whatsoever..?

sounds like my transmission on friday. where is my car today? at the shop waiting for the new tranny to be delivered. the cost? around $3200, OUCH

if you don't hear any nasty noises, like gears grinding or stuff just reving, then i'd bet it is probably an electrical problem. you might have a bad xmission shift control module or something along those lines. you will probably have to take it in and have them hook the trans upto a computer.

I remember once my check engine light came on for a PNRD2L sensor, and that cleared up on its own a year or so back, also there is no grinding or anything. It just acts like it is in neutral.

why are you not getting the code scanned?

LOL, because the car cant move. 🙂 Thankfully it broke down 1 block away from my house, so I pushed it into my parking lot.

Well, I got the transmission checked out today, and it seems the torque convertor is busted (LITERALLY) into pieces. Probably from dropping it into gear from nuetral @ high rpms too many times. 🙂

I got quoted ~$900 (Including the $50 towing fee) to get the part replaced, and transmssion looked over...

Seems like a lot, but it's only roughly 80% of one paycheck to me, so it's not killing my wallet too much. I am interested whether or not I am getting it really rammed in the a$$, or is this a semi-reasonable price for parts/labor..?

What would you guys pay..?

Yes. It's dead. As long as Park works, the linkage is good, so the reason it's in "neutral" is because it has failed internally.

I had one fail once and it just went. No prior warning. Of course, it had 217,000 miles at the time...

You cannot damage the torque converter from a neutral drop, at least, not that much... You damage the transmission internals and brake bands rather seriously, but the torque converter itself doesn't get beaten up too badly from a neutral drop. There are most likely looming problems in the rest of the transmission if you made a habit of doing neutral drops.

Automatics make me mad. more to go wrong and more likely to fail. Bleh!!

It is my first car (bought it 4 years ago) and I didn't (and still cant really) drive a stick shift car even now. I can move one if I had to though.
