So I let my girlfriend borrow my truck last weekend since hers was stolen and I use public transportation to get to work. We went to go get her car from the towing company a couple days ago after the police recovered it, and when I tried to put the stick shift in first gear, it wouldn't go in. It took like 10 tries before it finally did. It's regularly a bit tricky to get it in first anyway, but this time it was like it wasn't going to go in period. After I got going it was fine. Leaving the towing company it was fine as well.

maybe check the fluids? mine has been getting hard to shift into any gear, i think it's the fluids (i'll be putting honda mtf in it as soon as my timing belt gets replaced)

edit: by fluids i mean mtf fluid of course

Checked them about a month ago when I changed the oil. The transmission was low on fluid now that I think about it... Hmm.

I have cheap fluid in one of my cars, and the tranny is a bit rougher than my MR2 (synthetic fluid that was about 6x the price..heh)..so low fluid might be worth fixing. 😉

Every now and again first can "lock out" if the teeth just happen to stop at a non-mesh point. Usually engaging the clutch with the transmission in neutral and then disengaging it and trying first again will solve the problem. Unless there was a grinding noise, your clutch is fine.

Oh, I made sure to add more fluid. My dad was adamant about it.

I didn't notice any grinding noises, and it hasn't happened since, so I imagine it was that.
