I need to get a new car as my old one is nearing it's 23 birthday. I want something cheap, reliable, and hopefully long lasting. Basically, I'm looking at Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. I want a smaller car, not an SUV, so something like an Accord, Civic or Sentra. I'm not locked into those specifically, but they seemed like a good starting place for my needs. I also am not looking for many features, just a CD player and air conditioning. Any advice, concerns, comments are more than welcome. Also, if you have stories/experiences with certain cars/dealers please let me know. BTW I'm in the Bay Area (Northern California for those who don't know). Thanks

for cars under $15k and new, i'd seriously consider the corolla/matrix. both are nice solid cars that will serve as great commuters and great on gas, are reliable, and have high resell values.

also look into a base camry, or maybe a hyundai sonata/elentra if you plan on driving it down to the ground.

and as for american/japanese, american cars are generally cheaper, but you really have to admit that the biggest american companies (ford, chevy, dodge) DO NOT have as nice a reliability record as the big japanese companies (toyota, honda, nissan).

think: if you can get a neon/focus for the same price as a civic/corolla, you'd pick the japanese cars... or how about a taurus/impala or the camry/accord? don't lie to yourself...

Aren't they around $25K? I'm looking to spend around $15K.

To the people talking about American cars: I know that not every car is bad, but my family has had bad luck with American cars and I'm not interested in continuing our streak.

Don't buy a Korean car, they are junk. American cars are slightly better but some models are just horrible cars that will cause you nothing but trouble.

You couldn't go wrong with the Toyotas or Hondas but I would also give Subaru a look. The WRX is a great car and quite a performer if you get the 5 speed turbo model.

He mentioned cheap, reliable, and rattled off the Civic, Sentra, and Accord, in the original post. Genius. None of those cars are in the range of a turbo WRX.

2) I just priced a used WRx turbo (2002) being $15K

3) The top of the line Accord goes up to almost $30,000. It's hardly cheap anymore.

I should have mentioned that I'm planning on buying a new car, 2004 or 2005. So, it's going to be pretty low end to be around $15k. I'm guessing I'll likely have to spend at least $18k, but we'll see.
