YACT: Wow I'm impressed with my car's brakes

I was behind this slow driver this morning and when I got a clearing I gased it to 70. Up ahead was a green light but as I quickly approached it, it turned red. The car beside me going slower than I was went for it and made it while I decided to brake.

At first I really thought I wasn't going to make it and go tire screeching into the middle of the interesection. Somehow I was able to stop just before the white line with no skidding and no swerving from side to side when braking hard with lesser cars.

Here's a comparison between my car and others:

My Car
98 Lexus GS400 weight - 3690 lbs 60-0 @ 113ft

Others
04 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS weight 3263 lbs 60-0 @ 114ft
98 Dodge Viper GTS weight - 3420 lbs 60-0 @ 155ft

Even though my car is a little heavier than the other two it's braking distance is pretty good for a car that size.

same thing here. except i was going 80 on the interstate and it was VERY foggy (low visibilty, i know im stupid and i've learned my lesson). there is a traffic light at an intersection and a truck was stopped there. going 80mph and i stopped RIGHT behind the truck. no skidding or swerving, and i was maybe 1 or 2 inches from touching the trailer of the truck. 😱

Might I suggest that if the anti-lock didn't try to come on, you weren't braking hard enough?

my car has a rating of 185 feet stopping distance at 60 mph, i've only tested that once and it worked great, just glad no one was behind me

82 accord hatch, ~2100lb curb, ~3100 max weight under load iirc

I bet you havent

you're right, i didnt. thats why i got pulled over a few months ago doing 85 in 65! state trooper let me go with a seatbelt violation though.

The brakes on that car are definitely sweet - I have a GS430 and can attest to it. I've never had a panic stop - more along the lines of testing to see how the brakes work. Do the GS400's have brake assist like the GS430's have?

Where'd you get those numbers from?

05 Lexus GS430 weight - 3715 lbs 60-0mph @ 129ft

How can it get worse? Did they forget how to make the car brake?

Did you put any thought into it before you posted?

Adding 25lbs to the car adds 16ft to the braking distance?

Brake distances are usually determined by tire traction not the superiority of the brake system. And I don't think your blingbling ultralowprofile tires will do much for braking because the sidewalls have to be rock stiff.

Oh, and braking to a stop on some cars (esp some ABS equiped cars like the NSX-R) doesn't work too well despite the fact that their braking ability is very VERY high in comparison to other cars. They'll come down from 120 to 30-40 much more rapidly than other competitors.

Could be due to crappier/less sticky OEM tires. Often times just upgrading to stickier tires on stock vehicles results in noticeably better stopping performance.

Variations in test conditions might affect it also. Condition and type of asphalt can play a role.

Some brake pads also need to be broken in slightly before full braking performance is realized.

Just throwing ideas out there.

I know about brakes/tires, but my point is this. Do you think that Lexus (Toyota) would change something so significant on the same platform?

We're not talking about the new '06s, but the '05s, which (if I remember right) are the same as the '98s.

Yes the 400 does has brake assist. It was probably this system that saved me from going into the intersection as I initially felt that I wouldn't make it but mid way through the braking I felt the brakes just suddenly increased their efficiency.

change of the brake booster, change of the wheel cylinders. there is a couple of things

and yes, adding weight will change your braking difference, although I didn't catch that it was only 25lbs difference, oh well
