YACT: Would you buy a 1995 Grand Am?

No problems with the car, a friend's grandfather passed away, and he never used this car, so it has only 8,000 miles. He said it's for $3500, but I can probably lowball it to $2500-$3000. Should I go for it?

How is this yet another girl thread? Should be YACT -- car thread 🙂

take a looksee at the car, it's barely driven!

How often was it started up/driven? Cars not used often enough have problems too. Original tires? Those probly need to be replaced. I'd also change every fluid in that thing (Oil, coolant, tranny, power steering? brake, differential?).

Just checked KBB, definitely not. A 95 Grand Am SE Sedan V6 automatic with std features is only worth $2400. I'd say $2000 since you'll want to change all the fluids and such.

But it only has 8,000 miles. That's practically new. Checking on the usage of the car now.

its hard to say, the LOWWWW mileage suggest minimal driving time, and minimal use, which leads me to believe the oil was RARELY changed.

If the car was maintained over time as it was supposed to in addition to being driven very little, than $3000 might be more reasonable. Regardless, if the person's answer seems satisafactory take it to a shop and have them look the whole thing over. I'd have them check all the fluids, brake hardware, etc. If that thing was sitting for a long time, you probably don't want to bother.

Yeah, I've never heard of an eleven year old car with only 8K on it. If it's true, it's a steal at that price, especially if it was kept in a garage.

I told him about the KBB value, and he dropped it to $3000. Oil was changed every 3 months.

MAKE SURE you get a CarFax. A car that old with only 8,000 miles? I call BS on that. Its possible just highly, highly unlikely

No. There have been too many known problems with the Grand Am for years now.

Also, why do you think it only has 8000 miles anyway?

Seriously. Treat it like an investment.

Yeah, in another 10 years it will be worth $500...great advice.

I trust my friend, I know he wouldn't lie about it.

Take a look at it first. If it's just been sitting there since 1995, then you're going to want to replace all of the fluids and the tires, which isn't that time consuming but a PITA and it will cost you money. If it looks good and you don't mid replacing those things, try to lowball it to around $2000.

I can point you to a 78 Ford Thunderbird with 700 or so miles.. Guy bought it, (pretty wealthy), first rain that came, the windshield leaked. They tried replacing it, actually a worse leak. He said 'screw it' put it in his metal barn, covered it with a tarp and there it sat until he died about 2 years ago. Personal friend of my parents, and I've seen the car. Rotted tires and really dusty were the only outward signs. He started it once in the early 90's after squirting a little oil in the spark plug holes and turning it over without the dist. connected (let the oil pump build up pressure). It started. Replaced the tires himself in the late 90's.

IT SOLD AT ESTATE AUCTION FOR 8,000 in 2002 I think it was, and WAS DRIVEN HOME. No shens, no BS, as I said, family friend and I saw it drive off. No idea what he did with it later, such as changing fluids, etc. tho.
