Not looking to purchase any time soon..but am looking at my options. I really want a convertible though, and these two seem to be the most "economical" (if you can call it that) choices..

To me the '99 model looks a good deal better, would get better mileage..and I imagine is a bit lighter on insurance. Aaand I'm sure I'd be less likely to kill myself being torque deficient.

The GT though has a whole lot more torque, and emits the most beatiful exhaust note of any car under $50k today..

I have a '99 convertible V6 myself, I like it a lot. I waited until the new body style came out. I had no need for an 8-cyl engine, it would just get me into trouble.

I would choose the GT over the two choices, but neither of then would be a mustang I would by.

Unless your like my friend, who had the salesperson talk him into believing the 318's more powerful than the 360:p

Why would you get a Mustang if you don't want power? And if you're concerned about economy, why are you getting a mustang in the first place? It's like saying you got a 2.8L V6 camaro because it's more "fuel efficient" than a 305 V8. BS! It's a heavy car. It's not going to get 60mpg, no matter how small an engine you put in it. So cutting yourself out of power is pretty pointless considering the savings in gas mileage (if any) will be negligable. I know that my V8 camaro gets as good mileage as my best friend's V6 camaro, possibly even better on the highway.

Definitely would get the V8. Oh and the new mustang styles suck.

What's the difference between a 98 & 99 GT?

99's had the newer body style..97's had 215 hp, 98's had 225 hp, and 99's have 260..and the price difference is considerable too.

Not a big difference in torque though..290 to 300.

Mainly the heads and cams, but it made a huge difference in power.

Get the 99 V6 car. It's got the better styling and will be better on insurance. Like someone else said, the 96-98 V8 cars are not worth getting. That 99 V6 (190 hp?) will do just fine. The 96-98 215 hp GT's aren't much faster than the newer V6's...

agh

yes they are still much faster than the v6's cus of the torque they have.

I would get a 89 5.0 convertible... but that's just me....

If you had to get one of those, get the V8, but one of the later GTs sounds like a good choice.

How would it get you in trouble? By making you accelerate too fast?

I probably won't be racing it or anything, but would enjoy the huge rush that the low end torque will provide. '98's have 290 lb-ft of torque, while the 99's 6-cyl only have about 200..and the newer GT's have just 10 more than the '98's.
