YACT - Which car for under $16000

I will be getting a new car in the next few months and I'd like to ask you guys what you think would be a good choice. Here are the restrictions:

-less than $16k
-"sporty" in appearance
-preferably gets up and goes(I'll be switching from a 250hp '93 3000 GT, so I don't want a pokey car)
-new or newer (2003 or newer)
-no trucks or suvs

Here are a few thoughts of mine....
Mits. Lancer
Eclipse
Mazda 6
Toyota Celica

Thanks for your help ATOT! 🙂

no the lancer is, but not the eclipse... i think...

with $16k and you want a new car that has power. that is just impossible sorry.

throw in $10k more and you can hopefully get the lancer Evo8 slightly used. your 3000GT will seem pokey all of a sudden.

or just like what everyone will say... get a mustang GT or even a 350Z.

*edit: oh i didn't see you are also considering used... then i suggest a used 02' maxima/altima SE. fast cars, reliable, and reasonable comfortable.

Spend the extra $1000 and get the Scion TC for $17k.

New, w/ warranty, toyota reliablity, totally pimp.

just what I was going to say

my friend just bought one.. says its sportier than the lancer it replaced...

I seriously thought about a Scion TC, but Scion hasn't been out for very long, so I'm kinda leery.

tami, The local paper has brand new 05 Mazda 6s for $15295

Ok, I'm now comparing these two vehicles:

Mazda 6 and Scion TC

Seriously, is Scion that reliable? I'm a bit worried considering they've been out for what, a year?

and how many bad things have you heard about them?

The downside is that buying new is almost idiotic. Why not search the dealerships for a used one? Find one that is slightly used for nice savings, them pay around a grand for a warranty to cover it. There will be used ones too....dealer demos are always out there.

Just a thought...

I just searched for a used Scion tC and I'm not having much luck, at least not in my area. If I'm going to have to get rid of my "baby" I'd really like to get something new, not used, unless of course it's EXACTLY what I want.

i agree, a new car loses value way too fast. you can get a used car thats nicer than what you listed, for the same price, and you wont lose as much value on it over the next couple of years.

its what my dad does, though being a used car dealer for a while he prefers to buy at auction, drive for a time, sell for profit or to break even, and go to the auction again.

Another car to consider is a used Mazdaspeed Protege.

Nice looking car, definatly sporty, and handles well (even though its driven by the wrong set of wheels).

I like that car, I might look into getting one in the near future as a "beater".

Oh, and I can't believe no one has recommended a Miata.

You can buy a used E36 M3 for cheap (>$16) or if you really want a car with a set of nuts, look for a used Z28 or TransAM.
