Question for people who do their own auto repairs. Where do you get parts from? I know you can get parts from junk yards, but what if you want new parts? Do you just go to a regular garage and ask them to order the parts? Do you order them online?

Depends on the parts. If you want a battery or oil filter, then autozone or some such. If you need a replacement door panel, a junkyard perhaps.. and if you need a set of headers, probably order direct from manufacturer or local speed shop (or mail order speed shop like Summit).

For the important stuff I need new, like the waterpump, clutch, etc, I get OEM. Toyota OEM is good stuff on my car.
For most other parts that I need new, Schuck's.
For any sort of bodywork/not-that-important/used, junkyard.

Depends on what parts you want. A lot of stuff you can just get at Kragen or Autozone or wherever. Some stuff you have to order from the dealer. Some stuff you have no choice but to go to a salvage yard and find on a wrecked car. Some aftermarket stuff needs to be ordered direct from the manufacturer. Alo there are mail-order places like summitt.

Really good junkyard search engine here. My father was looking for a Nissan Altima a/c compressor...I think it was $180-200 for a rebuilt one from Autozone. I searched here and found him a used one for $75 and it was a 10 minute drive from his house.

Man, thank you! That is a great site. Just found a new drivers seat for my Intrepid for $50.

OEM from dealers online. Never needed to buy things like seats and door panels tho.

Friend of mine owns a local store for auto parts... can get pretty much anything, and I get a great deal so I buy everything from him.

Autozone if I need something small and common. Jegs if I need something larger and more unique. Jegs is located in Columbus OH and I live in northern Cincinnati, so it's easy to just drive there.

Yeah, my local dealer's parts guys tend to give me wholesale pricing regardless.
