In my (auto) Mustang, if I turn OD off it affects all 4 gears, so it's not like it's a 5th gear like I always thought. I've found that I get much smoother gear shifts and fewer downshifts if I turn it off below 40MPH.
I've never heard of such a thing. Overdrive is referring to a specific property of what is usually the highest gear (some high-end have more than one OD gear).
I could imagine that it would change the shift points of the gears, but disabling OD should in theory disable top gear - are you SURE it's shifting into 4th and youre not just feeling 3rd lockup?
