I swear car problems come in batches. In the last three months i've had to replace the timing belt, radiator, and now it looks like the CV joints in my Integra. What the hell is a CV joint anyway, and how much am I likely looking at to have this taken care of?

hi,

It's what turns your front wheels.
Do u need a CV boot or the whole deal?
My maxima is $190 to replace the entire axle at Nissan dealership (per axle)

CV=constant velocity.
Anywhere fron $75-$200 per side. I would estimate your integra at about $150-$200 per side.

A CV joint is part of your halfshaft or driveshaft in the front of your car. It allows both a lateral and radial motion while the driveshaft is turning. The question at hand is whether your need the whole joint or just a boot. The boot is use to protect the joint from water and debris and to keep the lubricant inside the joint. The joint would be the whole assembly and it is usually cheaper to replace the entire shaft if the joint is bad.

Do you need a boot or whole joint replacement?

I replaced my CV joints for $160, and the included both at Autozone. Took an hour to put the first one in, then like 10 minutes for the second one. Its not that hard of a job to do, and your Integra shouldn't be all that different from my Civic.

Beats me, I didn't even know what the things were, much less their footwear requirements ;) I stopped by my brother's house the other day (he's a backyard mechanic, self-professed "gearhead"), he heard some noise and said "you need to get your CV joints replaced." I'll probably err on the side of caution and say the whole enchilada needs replacing.

If he's a backyard mechanic then he could easily do it for you. Its a fairly simple process. You can get rebuilt axles for about $60 each w/ core and it'll have a lifetime warranty. I know I've thrown plenty of axles at my car:p
