YACT: What should I know about AWD cars?

I might be moving to somewhere with snow so I'd want AWD. My parents want their car back so I need to buy one for myself.

If you can pick up an Mitsubishi EVO7 that would do the job well.

I've been impressed with my Subaru Impreza, although in AZ I have not had much of an opportunity to make use of the AWD.

Sorry if its off topic... I'm 17 and own a 1995 Ford Bronco. Just today I went to visit a neighbor on a deep sand dirt road... (and had just rained 3 in.) Getting there the first time was a PAIN. The truck wanted to slide everywhere. On my way back I thought to use 4WD and it wasn't a problem at all... In fact, it was some awesome fun

Yes I know 4WD doesn't equal AWD. But it is definitely nice to have all 4 wheels working for you at times.

He's in california, no easy access to an older model evolution, and I'm pretty sure you can't pick one up used in good condition for under 10K

If you are getting something for snow, how about you get something with decent ground clearance??? Oh and if you can find an any year EVO for 10k that is even barely drivable, you will get a cookie from me.

How much snow are we talking about where you are moving? That will make a big difference in your vehicle choice.

Yeah you don't need all wheel drive for snow, front wheel drive will work just fine.

True, you could not get a good EVO at that range. I guess he would have to get a scooby then.

And what about someone like myself with good snows all around on an AWD car? I'd be the one pulling you out of the ditch

All-season radials are typically not meant for anything other than very light snow...don't recommend them on anything with significant snowfall.

I didn't think I needed to state the obvious about awd w/snows being better than FWD with snows. I was merely pointing out the tire issue to those whom it may not be so obvious to.
