I need a utility car type daily driver to last me from the end of July to around the end of November.

I almost never have to carry passengers but I may have to carry dusty, dirty stuff in the trunk/back seat/hatch from time to time...let's say about two golf bags worth.

After those four months, I'll either put the car in storage for a year or just sell it...or drive it into Lake Travis; Who knows?

Alright, so what sort of car would make sense here?

[Edit] Oh, and FWIW, I enjoy driving...

Are you thinking about killing people then putting the car in storage so you aren't caught driving it?

Yawp...either that, or driving it into a lake to make it look like an accident...

:Q  :p

No, I'll be going overseas for a year starting in November...

Well, here's where I'm torn...

Should I get something:
(a) I'd normally never get but have always been curious about--i.e. hot hatch, muscle car, lowered Mercedes on dubs (what are dubs anyway? :confused;)
(b) So old that it won't depreciate in the four months I own it...spluh
(c) Fun...I have no idea what sort of fun could be
(d) Completely practical...e.g. Civic sedan
(e) Mystery box :)

This is where I'm confused.

Oh yeah, and for what it's worth, the country I'd be going to for a year would be Iraq.

Pickups hold their value like crazy. He ain't gonna find a deal on one of those. The same year, mileage and condition car could be had for 2/3 the price or less.

Best bang for your buck will NOT be a sports car of any kind. Those will likely be beat to hell. A Japanese car will cost a small fortune to buy, as much as the pickup, and probably not cheap to fix either. All FWDs are a pain to repair for that matter.

Hah, not much left, eh? If you can stretch $3,000 farther than this, for a solid, roomy, easy to maintain car, I'd like to see what it is!

Uh...I'm sure someone's gonna crack a joke or two...cuz that's ATOT

But my facts are:
I'm getting rid of my current beater toward the end of this month
I don't want to drive my weekend car every weekday
I'm going to Iraq toward the end of November

Why getting rid of the beater? Just keep it limping until you leave....

There are plenty of cars available....what price range are you looking at?

What about your S2000?

Edit: If you're going away for a year, it shouldn't matter if you're driving it all the time.

Well, an S2000 is fun for the weekends but it's not so good at transporting a field load...
