YACT: What do you think of the RAV4

I was thinking of getting a RAV4 because I needed something larger than a car since Im going to be moving every year for the next few years, but I didnt want a big SUV. Any opinions on it?

my girlfriend has one. it is big enough for *cough* stuff *cough* in the backseat and i am 6'3" 255lbs 😉

it is an ok car...lots of leg room in the front and gets good mileage.

It's a Toyota, so you know it won't be bad, but will you like it well enough to live with it?

Personally, I think a wagon like the Vibe/Matrix, Subaru Legacy, or the new Mazda 3 and 6 wagons, would be a lot more useful.

I still think of it as a 'chick' SUV, but the most recent body styles are pretty nice looking IMO. It almost looks like a baby BMW X5. In fact I pulled up next to a really nice black one yesterday and actually mistook it for the X5 at first glance.

If we were looking at getting another vehicle right now (for my wife as she's due up next for a vehicle) it'd definitely be very high up on the list. SUV view of the road, good size/handling for city driving, good mileage, decent price, Toyota reliability.

Too small

its a small car, the lowend engine sucks, its hard to fit 4 in comfortably (im 6'2)

its a chick car.

(yes, my mom has one)

The Freelander is so not worth the price. And, its tiny!

I stand by Forester!

just the looks. didn't include reliability, off road performance, gas consumption, and price.

yeah, Land Rover's stuff ain't cheap. but my dream SUV would be the Discovery. (it has like 11 mpg?)

Dude, I've been in a Discovery. Totally unimpressed. Unless you intend to off-road it alot, its a waste of money. Now, Range Rovers, that's where its at😎

It's nice for a small suv style vehicle. Could do for more power, but that can be said for nearly every Toyota offering.

I borrowed my fathers for a couple weeks when I smashed up my subaru. It was the dead of winter here in central NY and there was the usual several feet of snow everywhere. It handled well in the snow and cut through whatever I demanded of it.
It rides higher than a standard car and feels a little top heavy due to that.

imho, if its for city use, your only three options are the RAV4, the CR-V, or the Forester. Escape/tribute/freelander/xterra etc. if you're towing....

i have a CR-V, so i'm partial to it, but i did choose it over the RAV4 for the following reasons:

much more interior room, especially in the backseat (39" vs. 32") of legroom
standard 6 cd changer (i'm comparing top of the line to top of the line)
standard moon roof

the cr-v, however, isn't as sporty as the RAV4. engines are almost identical, w/ the RAV4's torque peak being a few hundred rpm higher. the rav4 is about 200 pounds lighter, and that difference makes itself known. my reasoning was that if i want sportiness, go for something totally different. (well, this car is a hand-me-down, but if i was in the market, that would be my reasoning)

in any case...test drive em

-Vivan

i tapped one in my truck and did $3500 in damage. <5mph crash. Whole rear door needed to be replaced. There was absolutely no damage to my vehicle, not even the brittle plastic license plate that took all of the impact.

It's a good car, but the styling is ugly IMO, and I think it's too small to carry a lot. I prefer a Subaru Forrester or Legacy over this one.

I was trying to stick with Honda or Toyota. I think the CRV is a little uglier than the RAV4, but more importantly, to get the manual transmission the base price jumps up to 19400 on the CRV, versus the 18400 for the RAV400.

Wife has one, a 96 to be exact,.....123k miles on it right now....she drives it back and forth to school every day....round trip of 150 miles. Doesn't use a drop of oil, never had a problem with it, and it just keeps on keeping on. We bought her a new Highlander almost 2 months ago but she only drives it around town....doesn't want to put the miles back and forth to school until next May on the new one.

My favorite small SUV in term of styling. I also like the Mit Outlander.
The Matrix/Vibe are also nice so-called SUV....high enough not to be called a wagon and low enough not to be a SUV.

I have one and I like it very much.

Unfortunately, I don't have my flame suit today so I'm outta here.

You won't regret a Subaru, honest.

 i am 6'-2" and im probably a lot bigger than you...it fits me fine in any of the 4 seats. you obviously have very high standards for how comfortable a car should be. the driver seat pulls so far away from the petal that i cant even bring it back all the way. its semi-girly, but definitely not a chick only car.
