Mazda 6, Hyundai Sonata. I'm sure Camry is a great car, but it's certainly not up my alley, and just because it's Toyota doesn't mean it doesn't have problems. My dad had a '95 Camry (bought new) and the clutch went before 100k miles, and Stereo system broke down.

Beats having a tranny go out after 5k on a Ford Escape....

clutch is a wear item, 100k is an ok lifespan. Significantly less than that is often the result of bad/hard driving.

I guess if you just want styling, go for it, but don't for a second think you are buying a sporty Camry. There is no such thing. It's just a riced out Camry, which is sad.
Riced out Camry? It has nice styling, nice wheels (nothing gaudy), and a very little spoiler on the back. WTF? I'm not putting a 12" exhaust pipe on it for christ's sake. I'm not even getting the V6 (I drive a lot of highway miles, so gas economy is important to me).

it's riced out because they threw a bunch of plastic cladding on it to make it LOOK sporty, but it can't put its money where its mouth is when it comes to PERFORMING. Car and Driver said it pretty much steadfastly refuses to move quickly... and that perfectly describes every Camry I've ever driven, as wonderful as they are in other ways. Everything from the glacial brake and throttle responses, to the wheels rubbing on the fenders in tight corners, to the "don't rush me" acceleration (despite horsepower figures), to the vague manual shifters, to the Buick-with-busted-shocks rides are all purposely designed by Toyota to make their camrys impossible to hussle down a road. the advantage of all this is that they are extremely comfortable places to be when you're just cruising down a straight highway. and you can't kill them. so for a family sedan, they are amazing. for a sport sedan, they are probably the single worst choice you could make. and so when they try to pair the car with sporty looks, that's called rice.

<regularly drives a Toyota Camry and a Honda Accord.

Camry is more of a land boat than a car. That's what it feels like. You don't really feel connected to the ground, more like you are floating above it.

Have you ever driven a Buick? Those are even worse.

lol, serious

i've daily driven an 04 solara for a while and i go through a fair number of rentals because of work and the impala, bonneville drive more wallowy than the solara.

as for american cars getting better, GM runs that marketing campaign every 5 years or so. Sure they get a little bit better, but japanese cars are getting even better also.

I'll just say that GM cars, their best common car products are about a 5 year cycle/generation behind honda/toyo's mainstream stuff.

The G6 is the least atrocious mainstream GM product i've driven and it's almost as good build quality wise as a previous generation generation accord or camry. The cobalt is also ok for a econobox, but about as a good as a previous gen corolla.

UPDATE: Alright, I got a chance to drive a couple of cars tonight - an Accord and an Altima. The Accord was first, and I generally liked it. The ride was good, the turning radius was great, it was very responsive, and it generally seemed to drive alright. I had a decent amount of room, but it was a bit tight... drivable. The next up was the Nissan. Now I really liked the salesman, and I would love to buy from him, but that car drove like absolute sh1t. Terrible. It was the least-responsive car I've driven in some time. It accelerated awfully through turns, and I just didn't like it. On the plus side, it was roomy enough to even possibly get a moonroof - and the roomiest car I've driven so far - but I can't get by how awfully it drove. I might also add that the dash looked like sh1t. Terrible. The display for the radio especially looked incredibly cheap.

Next I'm going to TRY a Hyundai Azera - because Naustica has been so freaking persistant - and maybe a VW, though I hear they're pretty bad room-wise. That's pretty much it.

The altima has a 4 speed automatic, the accord, 5 speed auto. Unfortunately for nissan, this isn't the 20th century anymore.

I throw this one out there:

Scion xB

I'm 6'2" and I could wear a sombrero with room to spare, but it might be on the cheap side for you.

I'm not here to insult anyone's tastes - to each his own - but for my tastes, that's the ugliest car to ever hit the road.

FWIW, my wife has a coworker that is 6'10 and drives a Passat. The front seat in them slides waaaaaaaaaay back plus they have a tilt & telescoping steering column that lets you make some extra comfort adjustments.

This is coming from a previous gen owner, I'm not sure how the new ones compare.

Good for you at least *looking* at the Hyundai products. They really are nice cars for the money. I really like the Azera & Sonota. The biggest downside to them is that their resale is still pretty rough.

its not just memories. they've been acting like the tobacco industry...acting a bit scummy and going against any legislation to tighten emissions standards. then they drop the ball on hybrids and then sh*t on em. now they are giving out gas rebate promotions to sell more gas guzzling suvs😛 they are making it very easy for people to choose not to buy american.

Ofcourse I too poor to afford a newer car.
<- Broke @ college
I would love an Impreza WRX STi, but it's just too much. Plus, I wouldn't trust a used one. You KNOW people are running them like crazy, so I wouldn't trust them.
They're built to be ran like crazy. They actually drive worse and have more problems when they're babied. Which is not too unusual for a turbo'ed car.

I think the new Camry is hideous. They stole the Mazda grill and the Bangle rear-end for godssakes. Yuck.

ill second that you will LOVE the azera.

its the Buick, that Buick should build.

its a very very nice looking car.

also, i will second/third the GTO 😀

Did you drive the 2.5l Altima or the 3.5l? I'm guessing the base model 2.5 by your comments. I've heard complaints about the interior on those cars being on the cheap side. I have a 2003 Maxima SE and it has the same engine the 3.5l Altima has but with 10hp more. I generally like the car, it is roomy and fairly comfortable but the torque steer is horrible and the front seats could be a tad longer and maybe a touch more comfortable. Still, the Maxima has 53k miles on it now and it has been trouble free. We've done nothing but tires, a brake job, oil changes and other routine maintenance.

 I think you'll really like the Azera. If you have some time take out a Sonata too, the LX version. Let us know what happens.

Brand new 2007 Altima is coming out in a couple months. Supposedly front suspension and steering have been improved, and it now has a CVT.

It's all good. I LOVE it that people hate my car, it makes me like it even more. Maybe I have some sort of f*cked up psychological disorder, who knows.

lol

I don't hate the car, in fact, I've seen worse looking cars. Must be a nice car to just haul people around in. But you probably would rather have me hate your car just for your disorder. 😛

The Honda Accord is a nice car. If you're shopping for value, the accord special edition gives you more than one of the new camrys in terms of options. However, the new camrys are the 07 models, so this factors into the equations as well. When I was looking at the two, I decided the camrys are being marked up due to the demand. Though I think that will change once they are everywhere. I think the 07 Camry looks better than the 06 Accord.

UPDATE 2: Tried VW tonight. I tried a Passat and a Jetta. My size 18s just BARELY fit between the break pedal and the side of the center console. That's out.

Then I went to Infiniti, knowing that I would have to have gone used to get anything there. Still, I didn't fit into anything.

Then I went back to Nissan. The dealer I worked with there was so freaking cool and easy-going, so I'd like to by from him. My only problem is that I just didn't like the Altima. Well, I drove the V6 Altima, and that solved the issue of power. Now my only problem is room and the horrible "cheapness" of the interior. The interior I think I can get over if I get the Bose stereo. The room, however, is probably going to end that as an option. My right knee just isn't comfortable.

Finally, it was back to Toyota. Well, I wanted to give the V6 a shot to see if I would want that instead of the inline 4. Let me start by saying that they said they were busy and to just take it out by ourselves (me and one of my boys that was with me). Well, I did, and even though I didn't mean to, I got up to 100mph. Let me tell you, that thing gets ON it. The problem I'm having now is that the shifter is very close to my knees on the automatic. I might have to go with the manual just so that I don't hit the shifter. Not a bad thing, but I can't get the V6 manual, so that kind of sucks.

Next thing is going to the Hyundai dealer in freaking BFE (I'm going to try to find someone closer, but we'll see). That Azera better be worth the drive.
