Ugh,

My 99-2000 Jetta has been sitting idle for the last 6 weeks. Before that period, I could tell the battery was going as it had a hard time starting and it hadn't been replaced for 75K miles. So, I go off and switch the battery, start car, leave it running for 10 minutes, everything seems fine. Today, I decide to head into the office and the car would not get pass 20 MPH! The car would feel super weird, like it was trying to accelerate pass a wall. Any ideas!? Does something need to be reset?! Help!!!!

Gosh, everytime I read one of these about the 99.5+ Jettas I cringe because I'm looking for a TDI.

What type of engine does your car have, and has the same gas/oil been sitting dead still in the car for 6 weeks? Might want to get new gas/oil and check air filter/spark plugs (if its not a diesel).

Are you off your meds? Don't look for a late model VW.

Okay, I just called the dealership and they said the ECM unit needs to be reset. Further research tells me I just need to take it out and stick it back in. Any ideas where that is!? Anyone?!

If your computer needs to be reset all you need to do is unplug the negative from the battery and leave it for anyuwhere from a few minutes to several hours to be on the safe side, then plug it back in. Boom, you're sorted out. In SOME cases, and a VW may be one, doing this will reset your radio and you will not have the codes to play it, but I'm not sure on the peticulars of your car.

I can't believe you have to remove the ECM to reset it, maybe just pull a fuse or disconnect the battery for a short while. Unless there is a button on the ECM to reset it.

That's what the mechanic at the dealershp told me.

Skoorb - Cool, I'll try that out. I'ts no biggie about the radio, I installed my own.

Awesome! Give it a go then; that's how everybody resets theirs for their maximas unless you bring it in to nissan or autozone and have them use the code reader to do it. Theoretically the car will run "rough" for a little while after as it learns new settings, though I've never noticed that personally.

What is the year and model and engine?

There are a couple of things that can be happening. But yea disconnect the negative terminal for a couple minutes then start the car again and drive for about 5 minutes and see if that helps.

Take off the eBrake? 😉

Look for any vacuum leaks too. If a hose came loose at some point it could do the same thing, confusing the heck out of the ECU.

Sigh, just started it again, still didn't work.

Does it run better when cold or warm?

With the engine running open hood and listen for hissing sounds. Are there any?

Does the car sputter or run ruff or just lack power?

Hmmm, how long should I leave it unplugged Skoorb?

Nutdotnet - Yeah the check engine's been on. I've had that checked a billion times at the dealership but to no avail. It's just an issue a lot of Jetta owner's have. It comes on, usually says the EXACt same thing "oil too rich" or some such. Get it fixed...rinse and repeat. It's pretty much a joke.

I'm going to take Skoorbie's advice and leave it unplugged for an hoour or so.

Kev

btw, thanks for everyone's advice!

It's pretty smooth. It ran rough at one period but the dealership "claimed" that the injector that went dead...or something like that. I can't remember. Anyhow they fixed it and the problem went away.
