I've been in the market for a used civic for a while now, and I think I might have found a solid choice (it's actually hardly used).

Here's the specs:

2004 Honda Civic EX Sedan
Automatic Transmission
3500 Miles
Silver

The car was driven for six months and traded in for a larger car. This is through the dealer. The KBB on the car is around 18,000. The salesman offered me 16,000 over the phone. After the test drive, he said he wouldn't go any lower, but he would throw in the Honda Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle Warrantee for free (he said it's worth $400). The car was awsome, in pristine condition, great to drive.

In terms of payments, this comes down to:

226/mo for 60 months

277/mo for 48 months

(with 5k down and 3.9 APR in NY State)

What do you all think of this? I would like to talk him down a little bit more...is that possible? If I could get him to 15,500, I'd be sold. What do I say?

Thanks!

Update:

Went in, offered 15,500 for the car with certification. He went to the owner, the owner said 15,900. I said gimmie all weather mats. Dealer gave me them for the front. I then decided not to get the certification anyway, as it brings the price down to 15,500, and it still has 2 years/30,000 miles on it. As I was no longer getting the cerification, I couldn't get their 3.9 rate, so I went through my dad's credit union and got 4.5% APR for 60 months. Payments will be 222.90. Bottom line: I'll have a car tommorrow! Woohoo! I'll try and get some pics up this weekend.

You can try a last ditch effort and say "I'm ready to buy at 15.5"

If that doesn't work, I would take the 16k, seems reasonable.

Watch out for the "dealer processing fee" though, some of these dealerships tag you with a 400-500 paperwork fee.

Go in all ready to sign. At the last moment say "Make it $15.5" and be prepared to walk.

Seems a little pricey to me offhand though ... *pokes at listing of quotes* Back to you in a second.

Edit - Okay, back. I'm in "lease payment" mode. For a purchase, that's pretty damned good as-is. Haggle for 15.5, or any/all of rear mudguards, all-weather mats, or a blockheater. :D

--so do I go "I'll buy it for 15.5" or do I say lower than that, with 15.5 in the middle?

If you say any lower than that, the salesman may balk and say no sale. Hell, he may do that anyways.

Say 15.5 firm, no more. That's within the play value. If he refuses, say "16K with (accessories)" such as the above shortlist. Wangle as much as you can - just don't let him know that you're actually willing to pay 16k. ;)

just say 15k and see what happens. insist on NOT paying 16k. you may get a lower price/freebies that way.

Also true. The 06 base models are all getting equal-output engines as the EX. Mind you, they're going to come in at a higher pricepoint, and don't expect 3.9% purchase.

Like GM did with splitting the Sunfire/Cavalier into two lines, Honda's doing. Civic moves up a notch, and the Jazz is making its way over. :D

OP updated with color, per M4H request :)

I don' t really want any mudflaps or anything, just a lower price. I doubt I can get him to 15.5, but maybe if I offer that firmly, he might budge a couple of hundred.

Mudguards are maybe twenty bucks dealer cost, and you'll be glad to have them if you live in an area where there's a fair bit of snow and road salt. Ditto with the all-weather mats - nothing makes a car look like crap like a mangled, stained carpet.

Should take a pic of the inside of mine, cleaned it out recently.

I think accord VPs invoice under 17K. It's a much better car than the civic.

The Scion tC isn't my cup of tea when it comes to styling. Hondas last forever and I think this will do right by me. I just happen to like the styling of the 7th generation civic.
