I was thinking about getting something like that done to my VW, but I'm not so sure yet. How much did it cost him, if you don't mind me asking?

Change to synthetic oil at the earliest opportunity. Mobil 1 0w40 or Valvoline Synpower 5w40. Switch to a bigger oil filter, either the Napa #1333 or the filter that comes with new Passats. What's the mileage? If you're over 45-50k miles, run Auto-RX through there. link. And if you really want to be cautious, install a turbo timer. Did the previous owner chip it? Do you have service records from him? Why do all of this? Because you might have turbo-seizing sludge in that engine. VW severely underdesigned the cooling for this engine in the Passats, and problems are now popping up because of this. The same engine in the Golfs and Jettas takes almost a quart more oil. And VW loves to deny warranty repairs on this issue for the slightest discrepancy.

Well considering you're upping the boost and making the car run out of factory spec, you would think they'd deny warranty repairs :p

Well, you don't let them know that you're running extra boost. ;) But the sludge problem arises even on non-modified engines.

To get 230 you need more than a chip. The Golf/Jetta for some reason routinely get a little more horsepower than the A4/Passat, probably due to the different exhaust lengths. And the most I've seen peope get on the Mark4's is 205, maybe 210 hp at the extreme. Without switching turbos, you'd probably need exhaust, intake, and intercooler work to get close to 230.

i think m bro's A4 is close to 300. He has aftermarket turbo, exhaust, diverter valve, chip, and i think that's it.

those pics bring back memories. Man I loved that car but god did we have a ton of probs with it :( It had a really bad tendacy to stall at bad times. also sitting at redlights the engine would rev slightly and go back down. so ruRUruRUru was quite annoying. (we quited it with a radiator flush, but not completely) so be warned! also had some problems with hoses. they burned off at like 50k :p

triumph: could the stalling be caused by the turbo? When we had it thats what came to my mind but I wasnt sure and it wasnt a very easy car to work on all crapped liek that plus I had no idea what I would be doing :p:(
