YACT: Tuning

Hi all,

I have a 50K mile GM Prism which has never been tuned? How important is it to get the vechile tuned? The performance of the car right now doesn't seem very good. I don't know whether tuning would help that... Also, I don't want to pay 400 dollars for something that may not be of significant value.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

what year is the car?

it's not really tuning, but general maintenance like spark plugs, wires, distributor, fluids, brake pads, oil, etc should be looked at. Maintenance is part of the responsibility of owning a car, so get it checked.

The expression "tuning" means adjusting the air/fuel ratio for maximum performance given a certain set of conditions. Generally speaking, in newer cars, the onboard computer does this pretty well. Before you drop $400 on some "tuning", you should be well aware of what *exactly* is being adjusted and why.

Otherwise, you're throwing your money down the toilet.

You mean a tune-up.

Like Apache mentioned, it generally includes:

oil and filter change
fuel filter
spark plugs, distributor rotor and inspect wires
brake fluid flush
brake inspection
transmission fluid service
radiator fluid exchange
electrical/charging/batterey system inspection
pcv valve/system
suspension inspection (worn tie-rod ends, ball joints, control arms, grease any appl fittings)
a bottle of chevron fuel system cleaner techron concentrate
rotate tires

There's more, but I can't think of them right now. A lot of this you can do yourself and save some money.

AKA 'A Service'.

Check the manuals service intervals, follow them.
