YACT: Transmission going bad?

98 Honda Accord V6 75k miles

Well well.....just thought I'd chip in for another car thread, you guys don't mind, do u?

Ok, I don't know if this happens to you guys or not, but do you experience that some days your car runs smoother and the other day rougher? I dunno...seems to me it has something to do with the transmission...or maybe my alternator goes bad again? That would really suck!!!

Well, what do you mean by "rougher"? Is there clutch chatter? Is it cold where you live? It could be anything from not beinga problem, to a problem with the flywheel, clutch, oil leak on the gears, ad nauseum.

Define "rougher" first

Didn't the 98-02 V6 trannies have known problems with them? And when exactly is it running rough? Like right after you start, after been warmed up, on the highway, the street, etc? When's the last time (if ever) the transmission fluid has been changed?

I have that with all my cars.

There are some days they feel really peppy and others when they feel sluggish. Don't know why.

Is it like that when you have passengers? One additional person makes a difference in performance.

V6 Accords were auto's.

Have you changed the fluid yet? It should have a drain plug so it is very easy.


But what do you mean rougher? Like shifting, or running??????

Nobody is going to have any idea what you're talking about. We're just as clueless as you seem to be without knowing more of the symptoms.

Alternator? Transmission? Muffler Bearing?

Who knows.

 

Too vague of a description, please be more specific, less power ? Rough running, how exactly ?

Yeah, that was my own ignorance. I actually own one and still thought manual for some reason.

Well...that's really hard to describe. Let me put it this way....on the so-called "rough" day, when I step on the gas, it just seems to have more vibration, the engine seems to run "dry"...on the good day, very smooth, the transmission shift smoothly...engine seems to be more willing to go......mmm....not sure if this helps.

I maintain the car regularly, last time the dealer recommend transmission flush...I didn't bother...think I should?

I am amazed this doesn't happen to you guys. It happened to me on my previous car (Mazda) and this current car also.

I guess I still don't understand what you mean by "rough." My Honda doesn't vibrate at all. My Honda downshifts when I accelerate quickly, but that's normal. This isn't what you mean, is it? Sometimes the downshift feels a bit rough, but from what I understand Hondas do this to kick up the RPMs into the max power range so that it can accelerate more quickly.

For the most part my Honda is extremely quiet and smooth.

Do you have a voltage meter? make sure your battery is at least 12.74volts.. I have seen people have funny computer problems with dying batteries.

Why would a rougher running engine have anything to do with the transmission?
Do a tuneup and then get back to us.

wish you were in Denver I would just plug in the OBD2 scanner and tell you what is up right away.

Well, for one thing..and this is what I've noticed....when the transmission shift smoother, my car usually runs smoother also or the other way around. It probably has something to do with torque....on the good days, the car just seems to have more torque on the low-end...

Yes, some days are worse than others. Various factors.

 

Try this first, with the ignition key removed from the ignition, disconnect the negative battery terminal for three minutes, reconnect, start vehicle and drive normally for 15 minutes, then report back to me.

The negative terminal is the one protected with a plastic cover or not?

Look at the top of the battery, you will se a + and a -, guess which one

The positive cable is red, the negative is black.

$440, I get enhanced perameters out of Domestics and generic (which cover everything you need anyway) out of imports. Sure comes in handy when I program my PCM .. that software was $500 though

Gah! Too rich for a hobbyist.
