YACT: trade-in for guaranteed $3k ?

say you have a '90 Accord (125k miles) that's still running fine but it's not worth $3k retail but that's what you'd be getting towards a trade-in - guaranteed. Would you do it for a more recent used car for < $5k out of pocket ?

Can you name some makes/models you'd do this for (what's a nice $8k used car) ?

Accords and Civics are so boring. 🙁 I've been looking for every excuse to get rid of it for another "commuter".

before you trade in, make sure you setup the price of the car you're going to purchase or they'll jack up the price and won't budge.

If they are giving you a higher than retail trade in, they are just fscking you on the selling price of the other car.

Sell it outright and get a better price on the new car. A camry/accord sells like hotcakes if you list it in the paper in the $2500 range. I put a '94 camry in the paper for $3200 and it had 135k miles and I had about 20 calls on it. I sold it within 2 hours of the paper hitting the stands/porches.

If it is some kind of a promotion as far as the guaranteed trade in allowance they most likely will only apply it to new cars or cars with a minimum price point of XX. They will also most likely want to know if you will be trading in your car before price negotiation, and adjust their end of the negotiation accordingly.

That bit I expect... and since I know little about the value of cars, I'm looking for something used that KBB would suggest at $9k or so...

Keep my '90 Accord or pay ~$5k out-of-pocket for any of these ?

'99 Maxima (60k mi.)
'99 Passat (50k mi.)
'98 Audi A4 Quattro (65k mi.)
'00 Eclipse RS (57k mi.)

If they want more than $9k total, I can't afford it anyway.

it's a promo on used cars only (autoworld).

KBB is a JOKE. Take a look at edmunds for a little more realistic price on trade in's and retail values.

KBB is just a figure made up and only used by dealers. It's really meaningless. It's overpriced on retail value, and underpriced on trade in.

99 Maxima, that would be sweet.
I am looking for a good deal on one of those myself.
want a 97-99 white SE 5 speed though... hard to find. 🙂

yeah, accord/civic are boring cause they don't have to take all those exciting trips to the mechanic like the passat, A4, and Eclipse. i love going to the mechanic and paying him my money! i also love not having a car while mine is in the shop! it's way more fun than a boring accord!

the maxima i might almost consider, but for 5K extra, eh. personally i'd say just keep the accord, it's a good commuter car, you know its history (hopefully good), and it will have less depreciation than a newer car, especially a newer car by the manfacturers you're considering.

Our passat has 76k on the clock and has only been in the shop once for a non-routine thing and that was covered under a recall. (Cracked vaccuum hose). I've put about $10 into it in burnt out light bulbs and that's it. The passat also has one of the highest resale values of any midsize sedan (short of luxury nameplates).
