I need new tires for my 2001 Honda CRV and am trying to decide what type of tire to buy. My mechanic, who's a good family friend and has been fixing all our cars for years (for a very low rate or sometimes even free) says I should buy light truck tires. This sounded funny to me as I only drive on paved roads and I never load heavy stuff into my car.

The tires on the CRV right now are passenger tires and the manual doesn't say anything about it. Any online tire store's tire selector tool always returns passenger tires. If I get light truck tires over passenger tires, what are the down sides? A noisier, rougher ride?

the CRV isn't a light truck, it's a passenger vehicle with a slight lift. unless you'll actually be taking it off-road or drive it in the snow a lot, i don't see any point to anything but standard all-season passenger tires.

"Off road" or not, the CRV needs passenger tires. I have passenger rated all terrain tires on my Grand Cherokee that I use for off roading. They give a softer ride and weigh less so your gas mileage is better than with LTs. Tell your mechanic that he needs to learn the difference between a car and a truck.

The most noticeable difference between P and LT rated tires in your situation is going to be ride quality. The LT tires will have a stiffer side wall, so your ride will be harsher.
