I think what he meant is that the amount that sales tax is calculated on is partly determined by your trade-in value. The higher trade-in value, the less sales tax I have to pay.

Nope your sales tax will be the same. If they sell you the nbew one @ 28K you pay on that 28K regardless of trade in value.

I personally would fix the van and keep it another couple of years. Understand dealerships only give the value they believe they could get at an auction for a vehicle. That way they won't lose any money if they can't sell the vehicle off their lot. This is usually half of the current market value is on a vehicle.

The other thing to consider is the increase in insurance cost, most newer vehicle cost 20-30% over what you are paying now.

Your right about spending money on a used vehicle, but if you choose a reliable garage/dealership most of these repairs won't be repeated over the course of two or more years.

I'd drive the van for a few more years. You know it's seriously more cost effective to drive it into the dirt, then buy another car...

Go get the transmission fluid changed in it soon though... A little preventive maintenance goes a long ways.

Not in Texas, you don't.

thanks for the concern, but I am not broke. If you saw the thread, much of my debt is at 0% financing. It's about time value of money and cash flow. It's not for everyone, but it works well for me, and obviously RossMan.

I will agree the vehicle is not that important, and I am 99% sure I will pass at this time. But in 6 months, who knows.

UPDATE!

Well, I took everyone's advice and passed on the Tahoe, and took the van in to get the A/C checked. According to my mechanic, it's going to cost $1200 at a minimum! And that doesn't include the rear A/C. Apparently, the compressor is tearing itself apart inside and the whole thing will have to be replaced, as well as a whole system flush and few other things that are over my head. I trust the guy who looked at it because his son is on my football team, and from experience the labor rates won't be any cheaper around my part of town. I could go with a rebuilt compressor but that will only save me a couple of hundred dollars.

So, I have put 2K in this van over the last four months and have to put another 1200 to 1600 for the A/C. What's next? I raise the question again, should I just cash my chips in and get another vehicle or pay the piper and stick with the van?

Go to an A/C specialty shop, not a gen mechanic...

Tell them you wouldn't mind a rebuilt or used compressor...

Remind me again why you want another GM product?

I need something that is goind to seat all six in my family -me, my wife, and my four kids. That cuts down the options: Tahoe, Expedition, Sequioa, Yukon, Ascender, Montero. I already got flamed for mentioning the Montero in another thread.
