I plan on redoing the finish on my car tomorrow using mothers claybar kit and some Meguiars NXT Tech Wax or Zymol Cleaner Wax. The old wax is pretty much done for since the water doesn't bead up in most areas but there are still some areas that do, how do I go about safely stripping the old wax off? I read somewhere that its okay to use dish soap but I was also reading that dish soap is harsh and can damage the paint.

not just any dish soap. Dawn is recommended, except that it is very harsh and can damage paint if you use it a lot. any good car wash shampoo + the clay bar should strip most of the wax I would think...

Was the previous wax polymer/acrylic or plain carnuba?

I used the Meguiars 3 step polish kit. Paint Cleaner, Polish, & Deep Crystal Carnuba Wax

No it will not harm the paint at all..many people wash the car using just this .. and it does do a great job of removing any wax

Dawn is just what the Zaino brothers recommend. Of course, they recommend you buy $80 worth of stuff just to wax your car too...

I don't really see why you'd want to wash off your old wax unless you were going to some kind of show wax. Otherwise, all the wax you can get on there will help protect it.

in my experience all this mutliple layers of zaino/meguiars is crap

i can get at lesat as good doing just clay/SMR/polish/wax

and you want to strip off old layers of wax because too many layers makes the reflection a little hazy

Zaino isn't in the same league as Meguirs. Zaino is sooo expensive for what you get. I just got some of the new Meguirs RXT Wax for $16, it really went on easy and came off easy, and I think it worked pretty well. Now, I'm not a fan of metallic paint (Acura) but it looks decent. Better than whatever the dealership monkeys have been putting on there.

What's SMR by the way? And what brand of stuff are you using? Zaino makes clay, polish and wax... are you using Zaino?

Any decent polish will remove the old wax.

And to feed another fire, Zaino isn't crap...there's just better out there.

I like Mequirers 3-step process. Zaino is too expensive for me. Will post comparative pictures soon if you all want. I'm going to wax my car in a week and can compare it to one with Zaino that was just done.

Meguiars 3 step is good but I would use something else for the 3rd step. The Deep Crystal Carnuba wax sucks. After 2 weeks the water stopped beading up and it didn't look very good. It still has an okay shine to it I guess but all that work went down the toilet after two weeks.

You are on the right track. Nothing wrong with using Dawn (or any dish soap, the key here is to use a degreasing soap. which is basically any dish soap) every once in a while before you rewax. You aren't going to hurt your car.

Consumer Reports did a thing on car wax a while back. Zymol came in #1 but it didn't last very long and was hard to apply. Nufinish was #2 and it also lasted much longer than the Zymol.

Meguiars (standard) came in at #20 or so.

When I first got my new car (and, hence, was suffering from new car syndrome), I researched like crazy on all the different car waxes and polishes available. I kept hearing how 'Zaino was the best' so I went all out, and bought their starter kit, and even spent money on nicer, brand name towels they recommended. Were all my purchases worth it?....

If you're the type of person who LOVES detailing his car, and spending a better part of the day waxing and polishing it, then, yes, maybe you should try Zaino. It is probably the most expensive car polish system out there, but Zaino seems to have a lot of satisfied customers who rave about it. As for me, I found out that I absolutely HATED going through all the steps and spending so much time on my car (especially, after the new car syndrome wore off ;). I am now looking for something else that'll give me the same level of shine and protection but with half the work. (Anyone have any recommendations?) I read that Klass was supposed to be comparable, so I may try them.

As for your dishwashing liquid question, Zaino does recommend Dawn -- it worked out fine on my new car. As stated by others, though, don't use it too often.

Klasse is great. I just put a coat of AIO on my silver RSX last week. Application is as easy as it gets. There really isn't a reason to do anything more than a layer of cleaner/polish like Klasse AIO and a layer of wax (unless you're going to show your car). And that's if you want to blind people with your finish. Really, if you want a beautiful, deep finish that has long lasting protection, all you really need is AIO. I have some Klasse sealant glaze, which is probably overkill, but sometime if I want to blind people, I'll break it out:D
