Germans are great engineers - I think it's the Mexicans that don't know what they're doing.

wait, this post is a joke, right? if not:

wow, those are sure some trusted, big-name sites you've got there.

boy, when I want automotive news I can trust, I turn to "whatcar." (hold on while i stop laughing).

this gets funniest post of the year award. we'll see if you change your ignorant, racist tune when your VeeDumb starts having electrical problems. or maybe some of these wonderful issues, taken from your own link:

What things have gone wrong with the car?
Oxygen sensor recalled.

Driver side window regulator replaced 2 times (2nd time seems to be last).

Passenger side window regulator replaced 1 time and so far the last.

Trunk latch broke.

Center armrest console broke and replaced under warranty the first time. Have yet to replace the second time.

Rear pads wore prematurely which caused the rear passenger side rotor to be replaced.

Car does weird stuff sometimes.

funny that none of these things have gone wrong with any of the 4 150,000 miles+ Hondas my family has owned through the years. hell, even fords can go 100,000 miles without having crap like that break.

the irony of your post is that it's the VW owners who are willing to put up with crap breaking all the time, and you just proved it by linking to a nice list of crap breaking in only ~70,000 miles and then saying the important piece of information was "dependibility seems to be a strong point." but when you have a car that's bought primarily by women and metros, you tend to get owners who will put up with anything as long as the car is cute. "dependable" means "it's still cute after 70,000 miles!!!11!"

consumer reports just released a report of vehicle reliability. enjoy:

Europe: Few standouts. Relatively few European cars did well. The handful showing average or better reliability are the BMW 3 Series, the Saab 9-3 and 9-5, and all Volvos except the XC90 SUV.

But all Mercedes-Benz models were below average, as were all Audis, Jaguars, Land Rovers, and the BMW 7 Series, X5 SUV, and Mini Cooper.

Volkswagen continued losing ground, with the Golf, Jetta, New Beetle, and four-cylinder Passat all worse than average.

I only know one person with a late-model VW, and it's a POS.

yeah, like 1 person really counts. he probably doesn't take care of his car, OR HIS WOMAN.

Right. How about it sucked right off the lot? That's my friends' car (2k1 Passat). Nothin' but trouble.

There's a reason you only know one person who owns a VW......everybody was smart enough not to buy one after hearing that one person's experience.

Riiiiight.

A Passat is 80% A4, as big as an A6, and costs less than an A4. Sounds like an intelligent choice for me.

People who buy a Camry are too cheap to buy an ES300. People who buy a Maxima are too cheap to buy an Infinity. People who buy an Accord are too cheap to buy a TL.

I was thinking of getting and Volvo (and still am very slightly) but I read some reviews on autos.msn.com and 9/10 of people say its a very expensive car to maintain, so they really grounded me on the Volvo, it was starting to sound like a really really cool turbo wagon.

It's InifinitI ;)

I think what he means is that people who have this superiority complex that german cars are inherently better than American or Japanese buy VW. Just so they feel good about driving a german car.

I'm probably going to get flamed beyond belief, but I drive an '03 Jetta, and I haven't had any horror stories to speak of. The only problem I had was when a window retainer broke and the pane fell into the car door, but that was partly because my friend slammed the door extremely hard just for kicks. I do believe it is a documented VW problem, but I did get a letter in the mail from them months before saying that they were aware of the issue and if it ever happened, just bring it in to any service center to get new retainers for free. When I took it in, they fixed it within the hour.

All in all, I am very happy with my car (Guess I'm just lucky?). What I find somewhat annoying is when people bash VW (or any brand of car for that matter) and they haven't had any firsthand experience with it. Used to own one and it was a POS, or your friend had one and it was a POS? b!tch all you want about it :)

Past experience carries a lot of weight. For example, my dad had a '74 Ford Mustang. He'll never buy another Ford product after that. Dad also had an '83 Nissan Sentra Wagon. Big POS. He'll probably never buy another Nissan.

And I trust friends' experiences a lot more the random people on a review site. Granted, you have to take everything with a grain of salt but its better then being a guinea pig yourself.

"My VW brings all the boys to the yard, and they're like, it's better than yours...damn right it's better than yours..."

Sorry....couldn't resist...

VW definately had quality issues so much so that it ranked in the bottom 5 of over 30 manufacturers.
One of the big things dragging them down was dealership service shops, so not directly the fault of the car but indicative of the company.
I don't have a problem with German Engineering but its the best? Hardly. . . Definately seem to have a passion for cars though :)

It's been over 10 years and they still haven't fixed the window problem? My sister had manual windows on her 92 Jetta (bought brand new) and 2 of them stopped working. She couldn't get them to roll up or down.

How difficult is it for VW to get windows that work?

Haha you know how many times I've had to pick up my friend fromt he VW dealership in the past year? He has a Jetta and had the window malfunctioning problem. Look how long that was going on before they admitted to it and replaced it with a metal one. He was driving in the rain and his windows failed.

After that was fixed 3 times, twice with the plastic piece, third with the metal, his wipers fail, while driving in the rain. He has to call a tow truck. Great fun.

My manager at work has a Passat. Same sort of sh*t. She sold hers for a Honda S2000. I am sure if people wanted, they could tell you stories of family members and friends experiences with VW. I know I'll never get one.
