TSB #95S28 NOV 95 Recall - Ignition Switch Replacement

Boy, that sounds like a fun thing to play with, too. I've never messed with one, so I don't know for sure...

Hmmm...that recall list is for a Mustang 4 cyl. Is it any different for a GT, 5.0 you think. It probably isn't...

Edit:

NM, I looked here and it's listed...

Hmmm...it's listed under "safety recall"? Does that mean it's dangerous to not get it done. The reason I never bothered is because the only Ford dealer around here likes to do burnouts with Mustangs in their bays...

I would recommend having it done, 95S28, the potential problem is over time dust can close an air gap between the B+ terminal and the ignition circuit causing the switch to overheat and possible start a fire.

Ok guys...justgot back from Autozone with a new solenoid...thanks Ornery. There is a small problem though....the new one has an extra terminal? Otherwise, they are identical..

Here is the original

Notice how it has two large terminals, and one small one on top.

Here is the new one

Notice how it has an additional small terminal on the bottom.

You can see in the pic of the new one, the upper terminal is labeled "S", and the lower one, the one I have no lead for, is labeled "I" ? Is this just there for other applications? If it's no big deal I can just put some heatshrink or something on the unused terminal...

Any thoughts?

The "I" stands for Ignition. Some older Fords use this terminal for the ignition coil while cranking, your car doesn't. You can cover it up but don't have to, it is only hot while cranking.

Thanks man! 🙂

I already covered it with a piece of wire casing I had from some 8 gauge wire I stripped the end off working on my stereo last week....went on like a glove. 😉

Ok, made myself a sammich for lunch with a tall glass of coke...once I'm done I'll switch 'em out and see how it goes! 🙂

Thanks thanks thanks to everyone the helped...

🙂

To test your failed ignition switch theory, once the starter is engaged remove the wire from the "S" terminal on the solenoid and if it stops then the switch is at fault, else it's the starter.

Just reading over my repair manual here, and it says I need some special tool to remove the bolts holding the switch to the lock assembly/steering column since they have "break off" heads. Any idea what that tool is that I need?

I just replaced my ignition switch on my 87. The fasteners were T-27 torx tamperproof, like a regular torx but an annoying pin in the middle so you have to get the proper tool.

Your's is covered under warranty so have them replace the ignition switch for freeee.

The ignition switch is cover under the 95S28 recall, if that is your problem, just take to your Ford dealer and have them replace it for free.

Ok, just did the test Quixfire mentioned, and it still kept going, so it appears it is time for a new starter. Just called up my local Autozone, and a rebuilt one is ~$100, and a new one is ~$130, so I'm going new.

Thanks guys..

🙂

Just one question though...how come it wil lkeep running the starter with the key out of the ignition?

Some Ford vehicles used dual starter solenoids, yours is most likely one of them. So the second solenoid is sticking causing the starter to keep running. Now if yours doesn't have the extra solenoid mounted on the starter, then I don't know...

... that's kinda spooky. Wasn't if a full moon the other night? :Q

Cool. I had to replace the starter in my car last summer, first time I had done it. Pain in the ass to try to support that thing with your arm while you're laying on the ground on your back. And one of the bolts was hard to get to like yours. Finally got it though. And doing it in the summer when it's hot out sucked BAD. Oh well, mine was only $40. $130, holy cow! 😀

Yeah. $130 was actually a great price for a new, not rebuilt starter for my car. I'm not sure what type of car you had, but AFAIK, you need a bigger starter the larger the motor is and how much compression it has. So, my V8 prolly has a bigger starter motor than a 1.8 liter four banger, and mine likely is smaller than one on a V10 Dodge pickup or something.

Places like Napa were charging ~$150 for a rebuilt alternator, and ~$250 for a new one from Bosch.
