Ok, so I've been selling my '85 Celica GT-S for about a week and a half on Autotrader. I've received about 10 e-mail leads and 5 phone calls. Give me advice on how I should continue with the (2) strongest leads so far:

(1st lead) I received the first e-mail lead about 5 minutes after putting it on Autotrader (!!!). He wanted more pictures and asked a few questions about the car. I sent him 5 more pictures and the guy said he wanted the car for sure, full price. He is a soldier in Iraq and he'd have his wife come and pick up the car and pay for it. They live in Savannah, GA which is about 8 or 9 hours one-way from here. His wife did call me and told me that because she has to do all the legwork for her husband, she has some issues about the deal herself. She said she can drive a 5-speed but not on hills and was worried about that because I live in Northern Kentucky. Her next concern was the weather, what if she plans to pick it up in the next week or two and it snows? It was almost like she was hinting for me to meet her half way in northern GA where the land is flat and she doesn't need to worry about hills or whether. I am not willing to do this.... so I'm waiting on a call back from her to work something out (it's been 3 days).

(2) A younger gentleman called me 3 days ago and wanted me more information on the car. He asked me about 50 questions on the phone (Has the car been repainted? Why have you only had the car for a month and a half and you want to sell? Has it ever been in a wreck? How do you know? yada yada yada) He requested more pictures through e-mail and then while still on the phone he told me he wants to meet me halfway between his house and mine. He is 90 miles away and it would be about an hour drive one-way. I told him if he is 90 miles away and wants to look at the car, he can come see it. He said he'd get back to me through e-mail. I received an e-mail this morning and he told me he wants pictures of:

"struts and axles
motor and exhaust
under of car front and rear
rusted spot on fender
replacement fender
what kind of stereo is in the car and what speakers are in it
(specifics, model #s)
pictures of back seats and trunk
back bumpers and front bumpers"

I've already provided him with about 10 pictures of the exterior + interior of the car including seats, cd player, both sides, front and rear of car. He told me he wants the name and phone # of the person I bought the car from a month and a half ago and wants me to take the car to a mechanic and provide a statement from the mechanic showing that the car checks out in all areas mechanically and if I can't do that I can take it to a Pep Boys and they can provide the service.

Is this guy going a little over the top for an 18 year old $2000 car that I have already provided that it works and has no flaws? I am going to provide him with everything he wants, but what is he trying to do with the mechanic statement? If I sell the car "as is" and it breaks down 2 weeks from now on him, what action can he take? None I am assuming.

The other 12 or so leads have all just wanted more info or pictures and haven't really got back to me. Am I being a jerk by not wanting to drive to meet people to see the car or help with delivery? My father and everyone I know told me I shouldn't spend 2 hours of gas and weekend time just so someone can look at the car. And they also said if someone wants the car bad enough its common practice now that the buyer arranges pickup of vehicle.

a $2000 car? don't bend over backwards, they can come check it out
as you say, you are getting many inquiries, unless you need to unload it very fast, just keep up the way you are going, it isn't like you making a buttload of $$$ on the deal, so don't spend too much time on it

good luck!

Agreed. We just sold a car for $1700 and I basically just told people the history of the car and said "Take it or leave it. It's an older car, so you should have a pretty good idea of what you're getting into."

'93 Sentra BTW.

Quite right. I think it's the buyer's responsibility. In regards to the young guy asking that stuff I would probably not do it. Undoubtedly if you do do it you will have to demand payment for the service and receive that first before doing it (on the plus you could keep the mechanic's statement and use that later to sell the car, if this doesn't work). I would take all the pictures he wants, and I might take to a mechanic depending on my desperation to sell (but only if he pays first), but meeting halfway for them to check it out hell no. Not a chance! I also wouldn't drive the car halfway to anybody during delivery UNTIL I've received payment.

In regards to the car breaking down on his way out of your driveway after he's paid for it as long as you make a document and sign it and what not (probably edmunds or kbb will have basic contracts you can make) then they can't do anything. It should say something like it's a used car and there is no warranty expressed or implied. It is a final deal and there will be no refund issued.

Also, don't give him the previous seller's number. It's really none of his business. I couldn't even get that when I bought our maxima. It's a used car and as such there is some risk involved. You can't be expected to be able to call up all previous owners, their family members, and strangers on the street who may have seen it driving down the road.

the guy wants too much, don't be a jerk about it, but tell him if he wants it to strike a freaking deal and stop wasting your time (not in those words)

he's probably taking advice from his dad, and they are pushing too hard for a cheap car!!

Tell the guy that he is more hassle than it's worth to sell a 2000 dollar car. I wouldn't go more than 2 miles to show someone a car. They should come to you. Unless they want to pay a 50 dollar trip fee.
This guy is dealing with YOU not the previous owner. If he wants to speak to that person, he can look it up himself.

This is a 2000 dollar car were talking about. You should not do anything more than provide what you have, and fill out the necessary paperwork.

The second guy sounds like a serious purchaser, but its a little over the top. I'd oblige with what you're comfortable with but thats it. You're certainly not obligated to give him names of people for references.

I'd say "Look. I've got more people than you interested in the car. I'll maybe send you a few more pics but thats it. If you want to come and see it you're welcome to it." It's not like your asking a grotesque amount of money for it or selling it as a show car.

Dude, it's a used car and they know the risks. Especially when the car is so old. Don't drive half way up anywhere.

This reminds me of the time when this guy wanted to buy my car and he was from New Jersey. He politely asked "Can you drive up here this weekend so I can get the car checked at my mechanic?"... and my answer was "Only if you pay me $1000, I will." ... I am from frickin Southwest VA you dumbass, why would I drive 8 hours so you can get the car checked

Yeah, that's what it sounds like to me, but yeah, like anyone I'm ready to sell the car and am motivated to what the buyer is asking in order to sell, but this guy sounds like his next e-mail he is going to want me to have the car detailed at a shop and fax him new pictures so he can compare old pictures to verify the how much crap was sucked out of the carpet and whether or not it's going to impact the car at all. Or maybe he wants pictures of the inside of the door panels..... or I'm sure he'd like me to have JL Audio fax me a paper verifying they are indeed JL Audio speakers and not some other speakers that look, feel, and sound like JL Audio speakers but they aren't.

And you are right about the dad thing, because he sounds like he is in his younger 20s and he was talking to his dad the same time we he called me the first time. His dad would ask him a question then he would shoot it to me, like I couldn't hear his dad in the background.

Tell him, 'Take it or Leave it'. If he wants to go to you and spend the money to have it checked out and spend the time to do it, then by all means let him. If he wants you to do it, then forget about it. When I sold my old car, I would just accept if someone wanted it or not. If they insisted on taking it to a mechanic, I would say 'sure thing. Just setup an appointment and payment and I'll drive her in there and get it checked out'. If they don't want to do it, then fine. Go away.

I feel I'm qualified to answer that question. The civic hasn't yet been sold, but still will be.

Tell him Skoorb! =)

But yes, here is my adjusted plan to save money Budman:

I bought the car for $1500... selling it for $2000. I owe $14,600 on my Civic. It's blue books for $12,800. I would be playing the depreciation catch up game for another year or two in order to sell my Civic... but instead I'm taking the $2000 from the Toyota and slapping it on the Civic so I only owe $12,600. Then I can sell it immediately and buy another older car to save meh money.

Yes, RWD 5-speed Celica that runs fine. It has a new battery and starter. I've had it a month and a half and I've done a valve job and put it a new air filter, spark plugs, and wires. Tires 70%.

Side
Front
Rear
Driver Door
Seats
Rear Cross over JL Audio
Front Speaker JL Audio
Dash
Eclipse CD Player

damn that's a clean ride for so many years... except the seats of course... did you get it detailed or what?

Nah, just cleaned it myself. Also, my camera is only 3.2MP so it does a nice job of not being clear enough to pick out little tiny scratches and stuff =)

Thanks.

I find that the people that ask the most question, ask you to bend over backwards are also the same people that want the "too good to be true deal". You are getting a lot of feedback and the price is right you will sell the car soon.
