YACT: Recommend me some BRIGHT headlights

Mojoed

I know bright-ass headlights are pretty annoying, but my stock lights just aren't cutting it for mountain driving. (I'm moving to the mountains in VA) Hairpin corners, cliffs and deer all over the place have made driving there difficult with my stock lights.

I'm looking for suggestions for the brightest and longest throw regular and hi-beam headlights for my 1993 Honda Accord LX.

As far as budget goes, I don't care how much they cost, as I'm just thinking safety here.

Thanks! 🙂

Lights aren't bright unless they're directly aimed at you.

bullcrap.

The crappy old cars that need to have their lights realigned blind me a lot more then the new lexus/bmw/mercedes/audi/expensive car with super-bright hid's that are correctly aligned.

Hey Scouzer, Cars with HID (High Intensity Discharge bulbs) are required by law to have automatic headlight leveling devices installed. This will prevent you blinding on-coming drivers, even when you have a heavy load in your trunk causing your car to tilt backward.

Since I don't have automatic headlight leveling for my Honda Accord, I will not be getting HID bulbs. Therefore, I will not be "blinding" you or anyone else.

Sylvania Silverstar Ultra's are bit brighter and whiter than standard halogens and are street legal. Bit pricey at 19 bucks a bulb at most auto parts store (cheaper on ebay)

Edit: Becareful with getting those really high wattage halogen bulbs as they can burn up your wiring harness. You could always get a heavy duty wiring harness if you plan on getting some high wattage bulbs.

I ran these in my truck that had fogged up headlamp lenses. They helped.

also the only real need I see for uber lighting is high speed travel. Most upgrade bulbs can adequately light the way for most people.

Actually, automatic headlight leveling devices are not mandated by law, manual leveling is permitted as well. It just has to be some form of leveling.

I suggest getting driving lights instead of modifying your headlights.

This is better, but it has some drawbacks in that you'll look like a rally driver in a standard car and you WILL blind the effing crap out of anyone who comes around the bend, if you don't see them coming.

OP, get your headlights aligned and then check out the Sylvania Silverstar line of bulbs. Also, check into purchasing some foglights.

GE Nighthawks from Walmart for $26 made a "night and day" difference over the stock lights in my truck. Very clean, white light. I routinely drive a two lane highway at night and I don't have people flashing me thinking I have my brights on, so they aren't obnoxious to others.

Going off of user reviews the life on these are much longer than the equivalent Sylvania products.

First off, do not EVER buy a bulb with a tint (coating) on it.
This means anything that is anything except completely see through glass.

That also means Silverstars, silverstar ultra's, etc, mentioned above, are a waste.

GE nighthawk's and Sylvania XtraVision's are clear and they are a bit brighter than stock.

If you have seperate high and low beam bulbs, you can also get higher wattage high beams, but it would be a bad idea to run them for extended periods of time due to wiring harness and headlight lens melting.

This is a crappy old car that probably just needs it headlights realigned. There is noway this guys headlights could be as bad as the horrible headlights on my 89 caravan and I've driven it in the mountains of Wv for 5 years. Its called highbeams.

If your headlight lenses are yellowed/cloudy and they probably are being old buy some plastic polish and wet sand and buff them. Just start with 800 grit and work your way up to 2000 and then buff them with the plastic polish. Helped my van and my mustang a lot.

first example that pops up on google.

The ONLY drop-in replacements that put out more lumens are Sylvania XtraVision (purple/pink packaging).

Silverstars do NOT put out more light, they simply are tinted and cause more glare with fewer lumens. The eye perceives glare as "bright" even though you actually see less.

More importantly though, AIM YOUR HEADLIGHTS. 99% of the time when people complain about their headlights being dim, they have their lights SEVERELY mis-aligned. Aim your headlights first and then buy some Sylvania XtraVision bulbs.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy any bulb that is tinted, this means ALL "blue" or "superwhite" bulbs.

Wrong. They put out the same amount of lumens as normal bulbs. The only thing they increase is glare. But since the eye perceives glare as "brightness" the brain is fooled into thinking that there is more light even though the ability to see and distinguish objects is LESS than with stock bulbs.

I'm a bit confused now. They seem brighter to me HERE although perhaps I've just been had by clever marketing. 🙂

I'll look into Sylvania XtraVision per your advice. Will my stock wiring be adequate with these?

i love my HIDs on my mazda3 - replaced the stocks with 50w versions for some extra light as much of the roads i drive are unlit, and while ty aren't cliffs or hairpins, definitely ahve enough animals on them

I ended up getting a set of Euro Dezigns 9005 and 9006 from eBAY for $35. I had my aim rebalanced upon installation, so I'm now legal in Virginia at least.

I gotta say, these things are WAYYYY better than my stock lights.
