I'm buying a vehicle, but the registration is out of date. I have a dealer plate to get it home (from my dad), but do I have any length of time to update the registration from when I buy the vehicle?

Tabs? You mean the registration? If so, have the previous owner pay it or you'll be stuck with any fees and penalties.

I know in Illinois you get charged extra if you don't update your registration in time.

This is true; however, I've registered several cars in Illinois and I've never been asked if the previous owner had it properly registered. As a matter of fact, I know one of them hadn't had stickers for a year.

The vehicle was daily driven, and I forgot to check how out of date they are (most likely sept.)

WHere I live, a buyer can get a temporary tag from the DMV prior to buying the car. You then pick up the car, the seller signs over the title to you, and you take the car to the DMV to register it before the temporary tag expires. It helps to have a bill of sale showing the amount paid.

Check with your state's DMV website.

Unless Minnesota has different moter vehicle laws than any I'm familar with, the registration status of the car you bought is of no consequence to you because you have to get a new registration in your own name anyway.. I doubt seriously it'll even come up when you go to the DMV to take care of it.

Also while its still a good idea to have a bill of sale in hand as a receipt, most states base property taxs on the book value of the car these days.

A lot of people say tabs...it's just that most of ATOT never leaves their basement:p

I've bought and sold a lot of (older) cars. You won't have trouble renewing. You can usually renew (or get a new license plate, if changing states) within a couple hours, if you have all your paperwork together. Ideally, you could do this the day that your temp registration expires, though I'd recommend not pushing your luck. The temp tabs themselves will vary; dealers usually give you more than a month, but you can get daily, 3-day, weekly, and so on. Assume that the seller will buy the shortest time period possible in order to sell the car and allow you to drive it home.

As for fees and penalties, that depends on the state. Most will charge you a transfer fee for the title, possibly on top of various taxes, including use tax, 911 tax, local taxes and so on. Then you'll probably get another year of registration on top of that (assuming most people don't sell their cars shortly after renewing). I haven't run into any sort of penalty if registration had expired--a year of registration is a year of registration, and that's that--BUT they might screw you on months. My car got stolen one year, and recovered nine months later. The tabs had been expired for seven of those, but when I renewed, they charged me for a full year and only gave me 5 months.

Vehicle registration methods vary greatly from state to state, so asking on the internet is unlikely to get solid answers for you. Some states bind plates/tags/tabs to the vehicle and others bind them to the owner. Some states issue plates/tags/tabs from every mall and others make you send info to the state and wait. The best way to get accurate info would be to phone your local police, state DMV, or car dealers and go from there.

Just so you know ... I'm 60 years old and owned cars in 5 states and that's the first I've ever heard of the registration plates being called tabs. Not that it means much, because it also means there are 45 states I never owned a car in.

There are approx 10 million people living in SoCal and I've never heard anyone refer to registration as tabs. I've heard the term tags but not tabs.

BTW-We don't have basements here either. :p
