YACT: Problems with a Jeep Cherokee

I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend of mine. The car is sitting parked outside the street on my house but I don't have the keys currently. Here's how it all started. My friend was driving over here from work and when she was almost here the car started to overheat. She pulled over, let it cool off for a while and then drove it over. Upon examination of the car it was found that the coolant reservoir was cracked and had leaked out the fluid. So we replaced the coolant reservoir but it still had overheating issues. So we looked into the car and replaced a bunch of stuff here's what's been replaced:

Coolant reservoir
Water pump
Serpentine belt
Thermostat
A few hoses

And I believe that's about it. Now the problem is that we can't seem to get the engine to turn over. We can get it to start once and when it does start there is an audible knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. If we cut off the engine we are not able to start it again for the rest of the day. Upon these attempts to restart I can hear a buzz coming from the engine compartment and various clicks as it attempts to turn over. The battery terminals have been cleaned as well. Any ideas?

What year? Is it fuel injected, or carburated? If it was running too lean, it would overheat, and not want to start for you. Is there water (white goo) in the oil?

If it's an aluminum block, it's very possible that it warped a cylinder when it overheated. Happened to a friend's van......chevy 350 aluminum block, overheated 2000 miles past 100k mile warrantee, ruined the engine. 🙁

Sounds like it might be time to tow it to a garage, and have a pro look at it.

I'm not sure of the model year I think it's a '96 though and is a fuel injected model. I'll have to check the oil and see if there is any water in there but I don't recall seeing any last time around. How would I go about checking the mixture to see if it was running too lean?

IIRC the '96 is a multipoint FI model and shouldn't have a mixture adjustment. I doubt that's the issue really, it's very rare for an FI model to mess up the mixture enough to cause that sort of running lean.

Yeah, if it's FI, don't worry about it being lean. I was thinking this was some kind of really old machine for some reason.

That sounds pretty ominous. I hope it's got a REALLY lot of miles on it, otherwise I doubt she's got her money's worth out of it for what this is going to cost to fix.

Sounds like somthing in the motor was damaged by overheating ... if she's lucky its just a coolent leak getting inside the engine but if not I'd maybe consider a new car before an engine rebuild unless you have a good friend who's a skilled mechanic.

Make sure the serpentine belt is on correctly. It is posssible to have them on wrong and something turning the wrong way.
