YACT: Power windows quit working

Vehicle in question is the g/f's 1995 Honda Civic sedan.

The power windows quit working today (didn't work when she started it this morning). Tried doors separately, none seem to work. Child lock is off. FWIW the power locks on the same control panel (I think) as the driver's window controls still works.

I figured a fuse, but I haven't found any blown. I've checked all but one 50A marked "Option" in the engine compartment fuse box (couldn't get to it). All fuses inside are fine.

Found wiring diagrams online, no mention of the power window motors.

Am I even headed in the right direction, or am I way off?

right window motor died on me, so the window sinks down a bit into the door, when it rains my seat gets wet.

Gogo Mercury!

Gogo Mercury!

That was most insightful, and quite relevant.

Thank you.

Window motors tend to die pretty often. Lord knows I've replaced them... 80 fscking times in the GMC. I actually keep a box on hand now.

But since they all quit at once... I dunno. Wiring fault?

Probably the motor quit. They tend to corrode inside, and i understand that knocking on the motor itself will help to dislodge the corrosion enough so it will work. Never had to do it myself, though.

But all four at once just dead? Working perfectly one day, all dead the next?

Yeah, I didn't notice it was ALL OF THEM at first. See my edit.

Oh, I didn't realize it was all 4. Probably a fuse, then.

Same thing happened to my Accord. It was the regulator. The price is reasonable, even from the dealer, although I can't speak for the price of a Civic regulator.

It's a pretty common thing I guess. You can have it installed for $30-45, or you can install it yourself if you're handy and have the tools.

Good luck :)

Edit: nm, I must have misread your OP. I didn't see it was all four windows.

Maybe I read the op wrong but I doubt BOTH window motors would die at the same time. It is most likely a fuse (try to get to that 50A fuse as that sounds about right for the electric window system) or possibly a short in a wire (but that should automatically blow a fuse).

Not much help I know but it's the best I can do :)

2-door or 4-door? I've never seen two or four PW motors go at once. Sounds like a circuit issue to me. Double-check the fuses, I've overlooked some before that were blown, sometimes they can be hard to catch. Remove the master switch panel and check the connections. Also, you can disconnect the power harness to the motor itself and hook a 12v battery up to it with some test leads and try it like that, to eliminate the possibility of the motor being bad.

Check the drivers side switch bank. They are all wired together and if it's gone, none will work.

The control bank on the drivers side may be shot and/or a power lead into the bank has wiggled loose. With all four acting up, it removes the chance of an indivigual motor.

Pull the driver side switch bank off the door and hotwire a couple of windows to determine if it is the switch bank itself. Also, determine if there is power to the switch bank.

When I've seen this concern in my own shop it has always been the master switch assembly or the ground circuit to the switch. I would start by checking the main ground to the master switch. If the ground circuit to the switch is good then I would start looking for a replacement master switch.

Good Luck,

It is related to the scratch in your truck.
Did someone "Borrow" the civic?

Bad car Karma man......

you could have a bad fuse if all the windows stopped working. otherwise you need to look into what quixfire says exactly. the wiring could be faulty or you need a new master switch.

When the g/f gets home from work tonight I'll pull the 50A that I didn't get to yesterday.

The other thing that comes to mind is she locked her keys in her car the other day & had AAA come open it (via the driver's side door). It's possible they knocked something loose inside, but the windows were working after they were done.

Now there is an important piece to the puzzle. ;) I would remove the door panel and check the wiring to the switches.

Are we talking about TheBlondOne?

If not, I will edit out this post.

No offenses to either of you to but look at the key word in her nickname.

However, sarcasm aside; look at getting a spare key for all vehicles, not just hers and spot welding it inside a wheel/hubcap.
Spot welding prevents rattleand it is not normal for a theif to go looking around for hidden key boxes.
