final update: i said $7400 and i'll cover the timing belt. she says $7700 and the car is mine, or else she's showing to a 'very interested' person on thursday. do i do it? kbb is $8100.

Text

bluebook is $8100 in excellent condition (private party) and $10k from dealer. she claims to have all the records, and it looks great on paper. i'll be seeing it tomorrow.

what should my starting bid be?

update: after the test drive, i offered her 7800. she came back with 8500. my main concern is the clutch, which has 72k on it. its a lady, but i think she mighta pushed the car a bit. plus she complained of a squeak at 60k miles. con: need to put $250 more in for an alarm, and pay about $400 more in insurance/year. but its a gs-r!

also have a 1997 2.2CL to consider. stick, 52k miles, leather, more luxurious than the integra and smoother ride (duh). yet, has decent pickup. cons: first year model...has driver door body work before, will need new tires and brakes, leather worn.

both are original owners with all records, clean carfaxs and titles. both green (oh well).

i'll need the car for at least 4 years of med school. might get married after that. but residency will preclude kids for a while. so, which one?

update 2: i wrote her a nice long email about the clutch being questionable and costing 1G to fix, her tires having 20k on them, and the car being 3k miles from a major service and she took my $8000 offer.

now...gotta get an alarm system, wheel locks, insurance, blah.

update 3: see below. having second thoughts about my offer after doing more research on the repair costs...

update again: so i started having second thoughts about paying straight kbb for a car that possibly needs a new clutch and is due for a new timing belt like NOW. does kbb take into consideration repairs that need to be done? she says it shouldn't be her responsibility. thus, i say, she doesn't get the price for excellent. thoughts on this fun negotiation game?

BB 8100 so that would be the absolute max I would pay but probably less unless it is extremely low miles (less than 45K)

Looks awesome. GS-R sedans are sweet. I'd say 8500 would be fine if she really has ALL the records and such.

eh, i don't put too much stock into those. i'll get one, but they don't catch under-the-table repairs. i'll most likely fork over the $100 for a mechanic to inspect it.

It looks very well maintained but I would never pay more than blue book value on a used car from a private party.

SSSSSH!! But the fender bender I had will never be noted anywhere;) No matter, only the door skin and a piece of moulding suffered;)

i've got a gsr and have fun driving it, but i'd much rather have a roomier, more confortable sedan.

I'm leaning more towards the Integra GSR even though it's a 4 door (I'd much rather have a 2 door but that's just me). It's kind of expensive but everything sounds like it's in good shape. I'm sure the clutch will be okay up to 100k+ miles.

I don't really care for the looks of the 1st gen CL's. Brakes & Tires will probably set you back $600 - $700 and those leather seats (depending on how bad it is) can probably be repaired to look decent again.

yea, the irony. turns out the the roomier, more comfortable car is a coupe.

a new clutch on the gs-r costs about $1200

I didn't even know they made a GS-R Sedan, I could have sworn they were all coupes.

I'd go for the GSR simply because it looks better and is probably more fun to drive.

I hope you're going to garage the GS-R. Otherwise, kiss it goodbye.

A clutch costs $1200!? I wouldn't think labor would be over $400, and you can get a clutch kit for under 200 bucks..

I didn't know they made 4dr GSRs, though..somehow it makes me think of a 4-door mustang..

4 door Integras are a rarity, but a 4 door GSR? That somehow doesn't seem to fit together. It's like a 4 door Mustang GT. Seems silly.

Clutch would probably run you $1200 at the stealership but a good honda/acura specialist would charge about $700 - $800. If you're around the Alhambra area take it to Kerechuk Motor Service they do top notch work.

darn, not at ucla anymore. know any good sf bay area shops?

as far as security, i plan to put in a viper alarm (possibly a 2-way unit) in addition to the club and brake club. plus it'll be covered when outside (have to trade off with 1 roommate for garage priviledges). what do you guys think? is lojack worth it? the neighborhood is fairly affluent with pretty low crime rates (albeit in vallejo, ca) and we have a vigilant, retired cop as a neighbor.

silly, but the gs-r will still run a 15.5 quarter mile and 0-60 in 7s. not bad for a dinky 1.8L 4 banger. oh, and they're uber-reliable, which is my main criteria.

My parents didn't get LoJack for their GSR back in 97 and 6 months later it was stole from our driveway in the middle of the night. Never saw it again, I asked the same question about a GSR (search integra) and people said they usually didn't want the car back if it were stolen.

Hopefully with all the precautions you're taking the worst they could do is break into your car and steal your stereo.

1) it's a 4 door...why would you get a 4 dooor intergra?
2) you can pick any car any day for KBB value (and it will be in the appropritate shape) - unless you need the car *righ now*, you overpaid
3) can't stand that color ... i had a turbo awd talon in the same green and never made peace with it...

on the positive note, it will last you longer than anythign else you own. Acura/Honda reliability is rediculous :)
