YACT: Opinions on Dakota R/T?

For some reason I get moist over these trucks, even moreso than the Lightning. Partially because they look meaner, and also because they cost a lot less after 5 years of depreciation compared to the Ford.

Anyone have first hand experience? And what is in the same price range as far as trucks go? I'd kind of like a performance truck that's relatively small, or something that can be made to look like them fairly easily.

Dakota R/T's are sweet.... but I'd save a little more and get an SLT with the 4.7L

it's a better engine, it consumes a lot less fuel, and has just about as much power as the 5.9... I think I may get a Dakota as my next vehicle, and it will DEFINITELY be a 4.7.

nevermind, I'm an idiot and wasn't looking hard enough. 🙂

Sounds like a much more economical engine option! Throw a 6 psi charger on there, and you've got a truck and a half! 😀

exaaactly 🙂
if i have the money at the time... the Kenne Belle supercharger (IIRC) will be thrown on for sure 😀
i've driven a few 4.7 trucks... love the motor!!! and best of all... the SLT's can come in a 5 speed... the R/T's are all auto 🙂

The 5.9's were weird in that they did not always respond well to mods.

The 5.2's on the other would crank like crazy when modded.

The choice is simple: forget the 5.9 R/T's and 4.7's, get a 318 (5.2 L) dak and mod it. You will like it, trust me.

The R/Ts are low 15 second cars stock. They are almost the same exact speed as the 4.7+5 speed. However the R/Ts have a handling package. If you want an auto, the R/T isn't a bad choice. If you want a stick, you'll want the 4.7. The reason why the 5.9 doesn't have a manual option is that the NV3500 is rated for 340LB/ft of torque, the 5.9 puts out 360. The 4.7 is okay with 295. The 4.7 is also about $4k cheaper. The 4.7 currently is a bit short when it comes to aftermarket parts, especially in California. The 5.9 has more aftermarket parts than you can shake a stick at.

If you're going to put a drop or handling kit, such as a Hotchkis 2/3, and you want a stick, get the 4.7+5 speed. If you want an auto and don't plan on modifying the ride alot, get the R/T. If you want to mod the crap out of the engine, get the R/T.

The 4.7 vs. 5.9 debates have been argued on every Dakota message board there is, so don't bother going to one to debate it.

<-- Owner of a 4.7+5 speed.

...get the 3.92 rear gear w/ limited slip. If you don't you'll be kicking yourself. (I got the 3.55+LSD, and am kicking myself)

As far as drivetrains go:
4.7 auto: 45RFE
4.7 manual: NV3500
5.9 auto: 46RE
rear end: Chrysler 9.25"

(same options as the Ram 1500)

I drove a RAM 1500 with the 5.9 in it and wasn't impressed with the power at all. I could floor it and it just didn't have the response I was expecting. Maybe its because i drive more cars than trucks. Then again my dad used to have a 78 Ford with a 350 in it and.....good lord that thing was awesome!! I miss that truck. It just kept eating the oil though.

fixed engine cube's for ya 😉

Who's to say it's not yet another Ford with a Chevy engine? 😀

One thing to note: it looks like soon the R/Ts are going to be coming with some go-fast-goodies that they should've had all along, and are expected to put out about 300HP. Differences are the M1 intake replacing the beer keg, the cams, lifters, cold air intake, and exhaust.

never understood the gears and traction control on the Mopars.. I don't know why they ever did the 3.55's in such a heavy truck..and so many Darango's I see running around as peg legs is amazing.. I thought LS was standard now adays.. Heck Century GM/Jerry Roth GM/Medved GM won't even order a truck without a locker up here in highcountry

The 3.55's are okay. The R/Ts come with 3.92s. I'm not 100% sure but I think the R/T package also includes the LSD. I think the reasoning behind NOT having the LSD standard is that drivers can get themselves into trouble easier (wagging the tail in the rain). And many drivers that know how to deal with it will order it.

For the record: unless you add a blower or 408 stroker, most Lightnings will KILL the Dakotas. And the Paxton kits seem to go better w/ the 4.7.
