Well, after I worked it out on paper, the cost of buying a new car would save me $22,000 over the next 5 years. How do you figure? Well, I made a spreadsheet that included the original cost of my car ('02 Civic LX) and the costs associated with owning a car for 5 years: 5 years of full coverage insurance, 5 years of annual motor vehicle tax, 5 years of fuel, etc... and the '02 Civic had a final price of roughy $32,000.
The cost of my new car over 5 years: $9500
Ohhhh, so what did I get?
1985 Toyota Celica GT-S. 135k miles on an unbreakable 22RE engine. 5-speed with REAR wheel drive (140 lbs tq @ 2800 rpm). Leather. Power windows/locks/mirrors/steering. Sliding moonroof, power antenna, A/C, cruise control, CD-Player, rear defrost. 4-wheel disc brakes. Absolutely no rust, thing looks like it has been sitting in a garage for 18 years. 5-year cost: $9500
2002 Honda Civic. 16k miles on a lackluster no-torque engine. Automatic with front wheel drive. Cloth interior. Power everything. No moonroof or sunroof. No power antenna. A/C and cruise control yes, CD-player NO (I had to buy aftermarket). Front disc brakes, rear drums. 5-year cost of car: $32,000
I love my new car and can't wait to sell this Honda Junk! =) I transfer the title on the new car day after tomorrow (Thursday) and I'll have pics up then.
Oh, and this is funny... by ADDING the Toyota to my insurance, the annual cost of my insurance went down by $1000. (From $2800 per year to $1850 per year). The car pays for itself after two years. Everything is perfect about this car!
Rawk. 22RE engines 0wn. I had a 1983 Toyota Celica GT for my first car, LOVED it. I still miss that thing. Let a friend drive it because I was too drunk to drive (he was sober) and he drove it underneath a Dodge Ram 🙁 When it was wrecked it had 265k miles on the engine and was still running strong 🙂 Great buy!
