YACT: Navigation

So I'm currently in the market for a popular luxury sport sedan. I subscribe to the school of thought that you should never buy brand-new, but rather let somebody else take the depreciation hit after driving it off the lot for the first time. Because of that, I'm kinda at the whim of the option preferences of prior owners.

What I'm curious about is, if you are going to spend ~$60k on a car brand-new, why NOT spend the extra $1k on navigation? I mean, if for no other reason then resale appeal alone... this has easily been the most frustrating aspects of my search, since I consider factory navigation somewhat of a dealbreaker given the multi-year commitment that I'd be making to the vehicle. If you're already spending that much to have every other option EXCEPT nav, it doesn't exactly seem like the straw that will break the camel's financial back.

On a related note, what bothers me just as much are the ppl who advertise as "all options" but have NO navigation. Grr.

because I don't like it? I'm buying a car for me, not the ya-hoo I sell it to.

Case in point: I could have spend an extra $900 for leather/moonroof/power seats when I bought my car. I didn't because I didn't want leather. Pretty simple eh?

because I can save a thousand dollars and put a sticky note on my dashboard with the directions and get there just fine 😕

maybe people arent thinking of your needs when they buy their car.

😀

I would not pay extra for navigation in any car in my present situatoin. I almost never drive in areas I'm not familiar with.

In some cases, the navigation option is mutually-exclusive with other options. For example, the Toyota 4Runner cannot have both Navigation and rear seat entertainment.

In other case, perhaps a better aftermarket navigation unit could be obtained for less $$$ and they wouldn't have to give it up when the ditch the car?

While I see your point, I think a lot of people just view it as a useless gadget, especially if they don't travel a lot. I wouldn't have ever gotten it for the same reason if it weren't for the fact that my last car had it and I got a great deal on it. Since then I've been hooked, even if I only utilize once a month.

When you order the car with navigation it usually takes extra 3-4 weeks to get it. When I was buying my car it was either getting the car right away or waiting a month for them to special order the one with navigation. Guess what I chose.

You got nav of course!!!😀 I don't think I'll ever get another car without it.

I can see the point of navi if you drive to new places all the time, either that or you have a shorted circuit up there.

In 5 years when you resell the car, the current nav systems will seem like crap.
It didn't take that long. The nav in the RL is much better than the unit in my TL.

I drive my car to work. 99.9% of the time, it stays in the local area, and I always get directions to where I'm going. I just don't see the point of spending money on an extra navigation system I would never ever use.

I travel enough. Paper maps are just fine.

Same here. I got one, and love it. You dont' *need* it, but when you do use it....you'll wonder how you ever did without it. The best is getting lost, taking the wrong turn by accident, or just not paying attention....she'll always recalculate and get you there.

NAV with integrated bluetooth and voice command FTW!!!

Your wife's a realtor, it makes a lot of sense for her.

I've got a portable unit and think it's a great addition. Not only for directions but for letting you know what your approximate time of arrival.
