you are getting raped (well your paying a bit more than i would) on parts, especially the mechanical tensioner and idler bearings (the two of which should be replaced when the timing belt is replaced).

You can get a whole kit like I linked above for $152, which includes the two idler bearings, a mechanical tensioner, and the belt. Add $128 for the hydraulic tensioner, $6 for the 13x1010veblt, $9 for the a/c belt, and $5 for the p/s belt, $6.70 for the tensioner spacer, $11 for a valve cover gasket.....

editted: theres a good write up on autozone.com, and im sure a haynes manual at your local library could help you if you were to do it yourself. the repair manual is like $16 at most autoparts stores.

Who makes the kit you're recommending?

The last thing I want to cheap out on is something that causes $2,000+ worth of damage if it breaks. (Assuming an interferance engine.)

If its anything like my Miata (1.8L), its going to be a PITA. It took a VERY long time for 2 of us to change the timing belt, and a few other things.

Do it yourself if you have the mechanical know-how. It can save you alot of money, and you can guarantee the job meets your standards.

If you don't have the knowledge... well then, you really don't have much of a choice now do ya? ;)

IF your timing belt/chain broke depending on the type of engine it can take quite a bit of the engine with it. $600 seems to be a reasonable estimate for the chain - I own a 1997 Saturn (GM) and I know that most estimates in this area range from $550-$750, with the dealer topping it off around $800 - but you are getting OEM parts & service.

The timing chain is a pain in the neck to change on most engines. It's probably worth your time to get a mechanic to do this job.

Not the brand of the belt you dolt, the brand of the tensioner and the pulleys. There's not going to be significant effect on the price from the difference in the brand of belt. And I completely agree that Contitech is a good belt, but the tensioners and rollers must also be from good companies.

I've seen too many good belts get shreded by cheap rollers and cheap tensioners that fail. And I hate to break it to you, but Contitech doesn't make the rollers or the tensioner.

i know that...i cannot tell from the pcitures on that website or others that use the same catalog what the brands are for the tensioners/rollers. GMB appears to make one of the rollers/tensioners, dont' know what the other is.

I know that [most all] beck/arnley parts, availible at many domestic parts palaces liek kragen, NAPA, http://www.rockauto.com is oem stuff repacakged in beck/arnley boxes. I do not know who are OEM suppliers to mazda, I suppose i could ask the parts dept at mazda to look at the parts someday when I have some extra time.
