Good luck.

Geo Metro or Suzuki Swift hatchbacks. Absolutely bada$$ cars, 60mpg, lots of manuals available, reliable, cheap to fix, cheap to insure.

The 4.0's get about 16 mpg. But they're very reliable, very fun to drive, and they have great power, infact there arent many other SUV's in it's class in the early 90's that will give you 235lb/ft of torque and 190 HP...none that you will find for 2 to 3K.

For 4k you could get an Accord or Camry in decent shape which can last forever with proper car and has great gas mileage. Civic is also an economical choice.

Go with an early 90's Accord but make sure it's in good condition. That car will be feel solid and last forever.

You can get a late '90s Chevrolet Lumina for 4K easy. It has "ok" gas mileage but consider this, it is a full size sedan making it safer and has a lot of trunk room. Seats 4 comfortably (5 a little less comfortably) and has 4 doors. ABS and airbag systems also of course.
