YACT: Mitsubishi Galant 1999 vs. 1998 Civic

Do you think this car would be a good buy for $3500? It has no problems, 73,000 miles

so what do ya think is that a good price?

I can also get a 1998 Civic for the same price, it has about the same milage and it also has engine trouble.

which would you choose

edit: added one more car and poll

Yeah, it's low enough that if something breaks, you won't feel too bad having to fix it. Galants are known to have nagging problems from time to time. My aunt and uncle had 2 for about 5 years, I think they bought them very close to new, and throughout the cars' lives, they had a bunch of misc. problems and was being repaired on a regular basis.

No doubt. I don't think I'd spring for the Galant in this scenario - nor the Civic with "issues" either. Personally, I'd keep looking and see what else is out there. The used car market is thriving - and there are some good vehicles out there - don't settle for the junk.

3500? Thats a great deal for the Galant.

I own(ed) a '99 Galant ES-V6, it was an amazing car. Great performance, great handling, I loved the car.

I notice that you don't own it anymore.

So far the Civic is winning even though it has engine trouble.

I know a lot of you don't like the galant but for 3500 im leaning towards it plus i forgot to mention it has a sound system, rims and it comes with an alarm aswell with engine start.

but then again the civic has rims to and a good sound system

MORE OPINIONS PLEASE

Wil

edit: actaeon thanks for the clarification lol

Wow, thats awesome. The rims have an alarm system.

Why not drive both and see which one you like better?

My opinion is you test drive/inspect the cars with a mechanically knowledgeable friend and have him pass a bit of judgement.

"Sound system" + "rims" = has probably had the living sh!t beaten out of it.

Not by choice.

You actually just gave me ANOTHER point for the Galant. Thanks!

Look at that accident...pretty bad? Not a scratch on me. I'd say its a pretty good car for safety too.

i don't get it. in one thread civic= ricer, in this thread a civic with engine problems wins over a mechanically sound galant, which is one year newer and is a mid-size.

the galant is not the best car ever created if you ask me, but it's reasonably-priced, and should be quite reliable. if you have to pick a car now, i'd go with the galant. shoot for an altima as they are pretty good for the price.

btw the price on the galant is pretty good. i'd expect one for at least $4k and above. depends on what condition it's it. get the galant checked out by a mechanic if you want to buy it.

btw those rims look pretty good on the galant.

as for you mitsu bashers... thank you for keeping the price of the galant down. i might get one myself soon enough. keep up the good work!

Because of reliability, I think most dismissed the engine problems because if you look around, you'll find a better one

I could really only choose from these two since im buying from a friend, but if you know of a better car for about the same price please let me know. btw I live in NYC

but OP asked which one he can buy is better: the problem-ridden civic, or a perfectly fine galant

im not saying the galant will run for 347k more miles, but the civic has a problem NOW.

as for some car recommendations, i've looked around the budget of $5k... and a used 98'-01' altima or the 99'-02' galant fits quite nicely if you can find one for that price, however usually have more than 75k miles.

and as much as people bash ford, i think the focus is a nice little car. prices are also low since... people bash it as much as mitsu's. newer hyundai's cannot be had for $5k because people are starting to realize that they are getting better.

That's not nearly a bad accident.

And sorry, but Mitsus are terrible from a reliability standpoint. Might as well by a Chrysler. 5 years is nothing to a car. If the car had any problems at all in that time, you should really wonder about it.

I'd find out what that "weird noise" is, could be something as simple as a plastic cover rubbing on a belt, or as serious as valvetrain problems. And it takes a while to change gears? I'm guessing it's an auto, and if it takes an abnormally long amount of time to change gears, I'd try flushing the fluid and refilling it with the correct stuff. However, if the tranny really does have a problem, I'd stay far far away

I think a 99 galant with 0 problems is a much better deal.
