Auto is for people who generally don't like to drive, and think of it as a necessary evil.

Manual in a sports car is for people who CAN drive that sports car.

Auto in a sports car is for old men who drive their new 911 or C6 5-10 below the speed limit.

Manual is for people who enjoy control over there car, want their transmission to last longer, and prefer better control over their gas mileage.

Auto is for everyone else, which is most everyone.

what he said..... if you love cars... then you get manual..... oh yea, girls will laugh at you if you cant ride manual... so better learn now.. hahahaha

GAWD all you people who say driving manual in traffic sucks are just little wussies. i live in LA and of course onle second to New York in traffic and i drive my daily driver 1970 VW Beetle to and fro everywhere which has REALLY short gears so i constantly have to shift every 15MPH. when you have driven manual for a long time you dont even notice that you shift. and i put in a heavier clutch so obviously it's harder to shift but you get used to it. i've taught almost all my gf's to drive manual in my car when i MADE them get a manual stick car. and yes i've driven svt cobras, ss camaros, bullitt mustangs and the such and it's just so much more fun to have total control over your car. hell it even made a crappy Toyota Paseo fun. just be a man and get manual transmission, and to be honest, most girls that i talk to think it's hotter to drive manual transmission than a wussy auto

Really depends on your driving style and what kind of driving (city vs. highway) that you do. Manual's have a slight edge in performance and fuel economy, but that difference with modern automatics is very small.

You don't get a manual for the 5% increase in straight line performance and fuel economy. You get a manual to have control over what gear you're in, and for the fun of shifting your own. It also puts some extra points on your man card.
Yeah, I know. I was just pointing out that using MPG or performance to say a manual is uber-1337 compared to an auto is not really true.

It really depends on your commute. If it's easy going freeway where you'll be maintaining the same speed for long periods of time, then get a stick. If you're going to be stopping at stop lights all the time because traffic is backed up, get an auto.

I've only owned stick shift cars. I love them, because they make me pay alot more attention to what I'm doing when I drive. But in heavy traffic it's a major pain to keep stopping and starting. It's not hard, it's just really annoying.

I'll be the dissenting opinion. I've always driven automatics and wondered what I was missing. So my latest car, which I bought about 4 months ago, is a manual. Took me a few weeks to get the hang of it and I'm probably still not at full proficiency. But honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. I don't feel like I have tons more power in my hands. I'm not a real aggressive driver, maybe thats who it benefits most? People say its fun, but I don't really understand what is "fun" about shifting from one gear to another. After you get the hang of it, it becomes a pretty mundane function. Not saying I hate it or wish I got an auto instead - just don't see why people say they are fundamentally more fun or anything.

So in summary - manual's are overhyped unless you are a very aggressive driver that likes to get the RPMs up to the redline before you shift (which is sometimes hard to do in an automatic since it would have shifted before that).

Just to pick on another thing I kept reading before I got the manual... "If its easy going freeway where you'll be maintaining the same speed for long periods of time, then get a stick." WHY? If you are in this situation, you aren't shifting, so driving in an auto or a manual would be absolutely no difference. Other than getting microscopically better gas mileage, mostly due to the better gear ratio in top gear. Might as well just say, get a more gas efficient car then.

<---- Getting an auto G35c. Bite me

Could I learn? Probably but I'd need to find a beater.
Do I want to? Not really.

I really don't see what the problem is. As long as it gets you from point a->b what's it matter whether it's a manual or an auto.

Most of my (commute) driving consists of about 10 miles of stop and go highway driving (lights and whatnot), followed by 20 miles of freeway (which is stop and go for at least half the trip).

A manual just seems to be a lot more entertaining to drive, even though it requires a bit more "work." Sometimes though, I just pop into cruise control on long stretches of freeway and let the time go by. High RPMing or top speed doesn't interest me nearly as much as amenities.

Why waste money on a RWD sports car, then?

is manual really more reliable/less expensive to maintain? i always hear about clutch wearing out and stuff on manual, but not as much transmission probs with auto. maybe i don't pay attention

You should add another question or two to the pole: If you chose manual, what do you drive. Same question for those who chose auto.

SUV/Truck - Auto
Car - Manual

I drive a Silverado, a Manual in such a vehicle just seems wrong... Plus, you can't get a manual with the LT trim.

In general I prefer manual, they are just plain fun to drive. I learned on a 1994 Ford Aerostar 3.0L; that van rocked! It still plugs away at 190,000 miles, but looks like it will fall apart anyday now. 🙁

manual sucks
i have one car with manual and 2 with auto

i see no good reason for manual these days

Exactly. If all you want is point A to point B, there are better cars for the money than a G35.

I think one VERY important point which I didn't make that clear in oen of my previous posts, and hasn't been mentioned by anyone else that I can see is the reliability. Auto transmissions suffer from a lot more problems in almost every vehicle then Manuals. Esepcially in sports cars and the like, or heavy duty trucks with diesel motors. Auto tranny's simply can't handle power like their manual counterparts.

Manual hands down, I hate automatic transmissions...

Only time I don't like manuals is in parking lot esque traffic situations.

Maybe your Sig will shed some light on why you can't see the good reasons. 😉 j/k

My last car and my current car has a manual tranny. For everyday driving, I think I'd go with an automatic -- especially if you're not used to driving stick. It can be tedious.

One of my neighbors just bought a manual based on my roommates influence. After a week she came by to get lessons from my roommate again because she was having difficulties. I asked her how it was going and she said, "I don't know how you boys do this on a daily basis." I think she was frustrated and found that you have to pay attention instead of just steering and talking on the cell phone.

I think my next car will be an automatic and ideally, I'd have a manual sports car for weekends.

I purchased a G35 coupe this past January. I initially had a deposit down for a manual but due to high demand and long wait list, I opted to get the auto. I don't regret it at all. I could use the cell phone, drink something, and operate nav system without the hassle. Furthermore, it's really convenient during heavy traffic hours. Besides, I am not shifting all the time when I am driving with a client.

Manual or automatic, it's entirely up to you. Ignore these fools who allude, "You are not man enough! Automatic is for wussies" BS. It's all about practicality.
