I was going out of town for a race this weekend to Jacksonville ... my friend was driving.

This guy I know through a friend is running for County Commissioner, and was having a fundraiser Sat night.

I know a whole group from playing some friendly poker with them. Anyways, one of the guys lives right down the street, comes and asks me if I can bring their grill to the fundraiser.

I explain I'm going to be out of town, but take the key and borrow my truck (these guys are early 30's, responsible, clean cut Lobbyists). I have NEVER let someone straight up borrow my truck, I got caught offguard, and didn't have time to think to get out of it.

Well today I'm givin' her the ole once over ... the right side of my truck is scratched like a mother fvcker. They obviously leaned the grill over against the rail of the bed, and it scratched it to the metal. I'm furious.

I don't even know which person I want to call and chew out, or how to resolve it. I'm not taking my truck in for a new paint job, and just getting the rear panel done is stupid.

And it's not even like my truck is in pristine condition ... 115k miles ... 98 S10 ... it has scratches on it ... but not like this, this is just plain neglect. It's not a beater truck, and that's what it was treated like.

I'm going to take pics later ... I'm furious ... any advice would be greatly appreciated ...

CLIFFS:
1) responsible adult friends borrow truck
2) scratch the sh!t out of it
3) I"m pissed
4) pics coming later
5) advice on dealing appreciated

What to do what to do ...

EDIT:

PICS - not as good as I'd like, battery was running low in the camera ... notice the nice grease spot from when the grill was tipped over in pic #1

First - calm down.

Then, go to the person that *asked you* if the truck could be borrowed, or the person you handed the keys to, and ask him about it.

A fact I learned a long time ago, MOST people just do not care about your stuff.

"Respect" for people and their property is not a natural thing for Americans.

Yup, start there.

Have you talked to them at all?

If I borrowed your truck & scratched it while you were out of town I'd probably return it too. I'd figure it's better you show up to a scratched truck than no truck.

Now if they deny it/avoid responsibility then I'd start getting mad.

Touch-up paint is your friend.

My 1985 F-150 that's been re-painted 3 or 4 times is a beater truck.

A 1998 S10 isn't a beater truck to most people.

Sh!t it's 3 years & 50K miles newer than my daily driver (which is by far the nicest vehicle I've ever owned).

Wow, that would really piss me off. You can't let anyone borrow anything these days.

Just get the side repainted. A body shop can match your paint easily. No need to get the entire freakin' truck painted.

thats not a $25 job

whoever ruined it should pay for that, id guesstimate a couple hundred bucks for it easily, at a cheap shop.

a nicer one would charge more.

Put up some pics ... bump ...

I tried calling the guy I know the best, we're playing phone tag. I'm circumventing tomorrow and just laying it out ...

I would take the truck to the local Chevy body shop ... they're good, can match the paint ... and get a fast estimate ... I had the front bumper replaced by them a few years ago when some idiot backed up into me ...

talk to the person that borrowed it, ask them to take care of it, or ask them to figure out who's responsible to take care of it.

it IS a big deal. They didn't bother telling you about the scratches or the oil spot. They need to take better care of your stuff when you do them a favor by letting them borrow it.

Just be nice about it, or have a cute female friend let them know what's up, I've found that smiles from a girly go a loooong way.
