My wife drives leased 2K4 BMW and her tire blew out this past weekend so we had to use the spare tire (which is a full size OEM tire). So does she need to replace the tire with the same exact model or can she buy 1 Kumho tire which will be alot cheaper?

I'll be suprised if they state the brand of replacement tire. I would replace it with something that is designed for the car, so if you have another blow out you won't blame yourself for being cheap.

I hate people like you.

Why are you leasing a BMW if you can't afford to replace the spare with a proper tire?

Besides this, you should NEVER mix tires on the same axle.

Doesn't matter. Most likely that car came with something like All-Season Michigan Pilots. A cheap Kumho won't have the same tread life, traction ability, durability, and characteristics of the better tire. Why be a cheapass? They gave you a car with a good tire. Just make an exact replacement and be done with it. Otherwise, I don't think a BMW fits your lifestyle. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I hate people that live like this. They buy something nice or expensive, and then skimp on the upkeep or maintenance for it. With this being a leased car, I think you are under some obligation (at least ethically) to replace it with an OEM tire, or a matching tire if you've purchased new tires.

Yeah, Chad Henne made it himself.

Excuse me. Michelin.

From personal experience, I had the same situation with a Dodge and I bought a cheapie for the spare and had the spare (that exactly matched the other three) remounted on my aluminum wheel.

No one ever said a thing when I turned it in three years later.

If the tire truly "blew out" for no reason it should be covered under warranty anyway.

You're not supposed to replace just one tire, you usually replace both the rear tires or both the front tires.

This is best practice against uneven tire wear.

Michelin tires are overrated. Though the spare tire should still be replaced with an original.

If it's just a spare tire, who cares if it isn't the same brand name as the other tires? Odds are that you're never going to use it (tires hold up well nowadays), and even if you do it will only be on the car long enough to get a replacement tire.

That's what I was wondering :D

It wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the other tire that is on the same axle as the spare with a new tire of the same model, then use the OLD tire as a spare. Then you have two matching, new tires on the axle, and it really doesn't matter if the spare tire is partly worn since it's a spare.
