YACT: Knocking noise on left-turning acceleration

So I have a Citroen AX 1.1 (carb) '91 which had the CV gaiters replaced a year ago, and a replacement exhaust (fitted by yours truly) a while before that.

If I take a left turn, not necessarily from rest but it helps bring the noise out, and accelerate hard, I hear a knocking noise from the left side of the car, and only when turning left.

I'm stumped as to what it could be, possibly some dirt got into the CV joints before the gaiters were replaced and the joint is failing? Whatever it is, I want to find out quick as I just got a bonus so I can just about afford this.

Suggestions, please!

[Edit] Almost forgot, there's no vibration through the steering wheel or pedals when it happens.

:(

£80 labour for a cheap part... sob...

Is this dangerous? Should I worry, or do I need to get it fixed up sharpish? I have two weeks off in just under two weeks' time, so I reckon I'll get it done then, but it's yet more work on a 13yr-old car. Still, she's my baby and I'm not about to give her up just yet!

[Edit] Actually, £80 was for replacing the gaiters last year. Can anyone give me an idea of how much this is likely to cost? Are CJ joints expensive?

I have a 92 accord. Sounds like the same thing was happening to me and it was the left front axle. May not be your problem but you may wanna check it out.

Good luck.

Sorry, I don't quite understand what you're saying, maybe because it's late :)

Just go to the breakers and get a good used axel. You Brits are big on DIY.
Face it, it's French and it surrendered ;)

Well it's certainly not going to win any military awards, let's face it.

Anyway. Is it difficult to change an axel? I might get a garage to do it so it's safe- I've done most simple things under the bonnet; oil, distributor cap & rotor arm, HT leads, etc. Just don't want the thing to fail at 70mph :)

If your a for real hippy and don't power your turns it COULD go a long while. If you can do a brake job
changing out an axel should be no problem. Get a manual and your spanners out and have at it.
If you can watch them pull one out at the breakers, that would be a help. To see how its done.

You guys do have many round abouts over there, so best to change it :)

Thanks, that's a real help. I have a breakers nearby that gets bits here and there for me, might have to ask around to get a good price for the axel though. If you don't really know what sort of price you're looking at for the part, they generally tend to slap £10 on top!

Nice guys though, and even though you have to trudge through god-knows how much mud to get to the right car, I've never seen anyone strip bits from old cars so quickly before.

Best I get out the Haynes manual tomorrow and do some reading :)
