I had a 94 Accord EX with an automatic that went out. It never slipped. It just started shifting harder, to the point it was almost snapping my head back. Started sort of minor but got very bad shortly afterwards. Maybe I am confused, but I think someone on this forum said that 98 Accords with V6 engines had bad trannies and that Honda was in some cases extending the warranty or somesuch. When my trannie went, I found out that for that model, at least, you have to check the trans fluid with the car NOT running, unlike most American cars of that age (as I remember). Also, you had to use Honda fluid. I told the shop thqt replaced mine that I had heard that Honda automatics required Honda fluid at just about the time they were to put fluid in. They then checked with Honda and found they did have to use Honda fluid. I think I basically burned mine up from checking it wrong. Do a search and see if you can find the earlier post as I am quite sure it is here. Good luck

Does it do it in all gears? Are you sure it's not just the tranny shifting up (eg you're accelerating at 35mph in 3rd and are approaching a stop sign, so you let off the gas and the car actually shifts into 4th because it thinks you're just going into a more moderate cruise)?

How's the fluid - should be changed every 30k I believe. Honda's don't use transmission filters so you just drain and replace, easier than changing your oil (except the fill hole is so freakin hard to get to :p).

Fluid should be honda fluid, redish colored, not smell burned.

Hard shifts aren't necessarily bad. Mine shifts hard, but that makes it nice for accelerating ;) Slipping is a lot worse.

There are known problems with the auto trannies on 6th gen V6 accords. Do a search on v6p.net, honda will probably cover your repair, they gave several models 100k powertrain warranties.

You owe us an update or else I'm never helping anyone on ATOT again with car stuff. :p

I heard of that extended warranty that Honda offers, I don't think mine is included. If I am not mistaken it should be 99 Accord not 98.

It's worth your time to look into it. Honda's official line is that only certain year models are affected, but IMO all 6th gen v6s are suspect. If you bitch hard enough to the right person at honda, they'll probably fix it for you.

Thanks for suggesting v6p.net. I found the information there:

Which Accords does it affect and what has Honda done so far to fix the situation:
1998 and 1999 models have no extended warranty
2000 and 2001 models get an extended warranty on it(7yrs/100,000mi)
2002 models have the bearing problem for the transmissions fixed, which supposedly fixes the tranny problem and thus are exempt from the extended warranty

:(

that probably came from this link

One thing to add. Honda has been "goodwill warrantying" 98-99 tranny's even if they're not technically covered. As long as you state your case and disappointment respectfully, and especially if you have maintenance records showing that you cared for the car properly, it is likely that Honda will offer you some help.

Man, I can already feel the defeat in your posts, it's not over. CALL HONDA AND BITCH. Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Honda has atleast a decent rep for dealing with these borderline issues.

I've heard of people blowing up engines because they do stupid sh*t like misshifting and honda still gives them another engine to blow up.

BTW, when you get that car fixed, get rid of it. Those 6th gen v6 transmissions are all ticking time bombs. Even after it's fixed, there's no guarantee it won't come back.
