I'm a 27 y/o single guy and I will need a new car soon, maybe just after the 08 models come out.

Thinking about getting a base Subaru Forester, but is it a girls vehicle?

I am also considering a Toyota FJ cruiser which is a much cooler, but it gets 17/21 mpg and reviews say it has crap rear visibility.

Opinions?

EDIT: Done deal, just called up and switched my Amazon credit card to a Subaru Credit card. Sometime within the next 18 months I'll be driving a 2008 Subaru Forester.

Does it matter what it is?

See if it matches what you want from a car and then make your own independent choice.

I recall someone saying that only gay men and soccer moms drive foresters.

I also recall someone saying that this is 2007, soccer moms only drive huge, ineffecient SUV's that only see the offroad on the dirt road going down to the soccer field.

I've always heard that lesbians prefer Subarus, especially the Baja, Outback, and Forester.

I've only ever seen a handful of Bajas on the road, and every one had a very butch woman driving it.

You're telling me. I drive by an elementary school every day on my way to my new job. I noticed last Friday that there were only SUVs or minivans in line to leave after dropping their kids off. I'm going to start watching to see if any people in cars are dropping their kids off, but I doubt it.

Well, I certainly don't want to be mistaken for a lesbian:p

I've got a 2006 Subaru Forester LL Bean Edition, and I can assure you I am neither gay nor a lesbian :) If anything, the car screams "I love Maine", not Soccer Mom!

Gotsmack, why do you want an SUV? Are you going offroading? Do you live in the woods where there are no roads? I think an Impreza Sport Wagon or a Legacy Wagon (if you can shell out the extra money) would be a better choice. Or, if you need the extra ground clearance, maybe a Subaru Outback Wagon will suffice. This is if you want to stay within the Subaru family.

the non-XT Forester is a lesbian-mobile. Not really a classic chick car, but a chick-who-likes-chicks car. but i think there are guys who could live with that image. the FJ Cruiser, on the other hand, is a full-on gay-man car. i think there is a clear lesser of two evils here.

I like having the extra storage that a sedan can't offer and I also need the extra ground clearence since the major roads my area flood every time it rains. So that leaves me with the Forester or Outback. I've decided to go with the Forester since I don;t like the look of the Outback's front.

Unfortunately, I have to agree here :( I offroad alot, and reviews seem to show that the FJ is quite a capable offroader. And in the end, function matter most. It's just... its screams pansy! :(

Hate to be a kill joy but maybe you should look for a 2007 Forester and not a 2008? Save you a lot of money.

I don't consider any Subaru vehicle a girl/soccer mom vehicle so I voted no. If you want to reassure you manhood get a XT, it's got hood scoop and some performance to back it up

Who gives a fvck what people think. Get the car that suits you.

EDIT: Obviously, you do. Let me reword it. Why do you give a fvck what people think about your car? I'm 23 and drive a subaru legacy wagon. I laugh at the sedan posers who think wagons are too lame for them when I fit all the crap in the back of my vehicle, and often unroll a blanket and sleep in the back in comfort during road trips. I laugh at the suv's at the gas station.

I think the bigger problem here is that you value perception over function. When in doubt... fvck what other people think and buy what you want.

2008 is a redesign. I'll save money in the long run in the end years when the 07 parts are harder to find. I'm going to buy it before next Summer at the latest.
