Ok, I really thought it was my transmission that's shifting harshly, but the dealer told me it's the engine mount that's torn. I don't know whether I should believe them..because it feels every bit like harsh shifting from transmission. Anyway, they offer to change the engine mount for $171, what do you guys think? How much does it usually cost?

Thats not bad. You have to support the engine, disconnect the engine and mounts, replace them and reattach the engine to the body.

A bad engine mount could certainly cause bad shifts.

Just have them fix it, 171$ isn't very much compared to the $$ in damage driving it around like that could do.

:p

How does engine mount affects shifts? Sorry, but I don't see how they relate together.

shifting causes vibrations, and if the engine mount doesn't support the engine, then you get lots more vibration then you should which leads to clunky shifting.

But why the engine mount could be torn? I mean...all it does is supporting the engine...no moving parts that I can think of.

I had this happen with my ol taurus...i thought it had to be a transmission problem but it turned out to be an engine mount prob

If you open the hood and put it in nuetral while stopped and rev the engine...let it drop to about 100rpm and put it into gear (quickly pressing the break) the engine will make a BIG jump out of the bay if the engine mounts are no good..when usully the whole car lurches. Thats what makes it feels like its having trouble shifting though cause the engine is jumping around the engine bay thus causing the whole car to shake cause thats one heavy pice of machinery ;)

171 isnt that much...mine was around 120$...but once it was fixed it felt a lot better.

It's rubber.
It absorbs the engine's vibrations.
Engine weighs hundreds of pounds.
Rubber is usually 4x4x4 inches, give or take.
Rubber deteriorates.
Engine slamming around with one bad mount will tear other mounts.
All mounts gone = drive shaft problems.

Pay the $$.

harpriye,

had a bad engine mount on my buick a while back, the part is self cost about $70 or so, it was an old car. Before I got it fixed the car would shift hard b/w drive and reverse. Bad endoing mount could cause the engin for spereate form the chassi of the vehilce, dont want to do that at around 70 MPH on the highway.

Allright, this better be the cause of the hard shifiting...it also looks like the dealer has changed the transmission fluid to make sure it's not the fluid problem.

it's typical. I'm planning on changing the engine AND transmission mounts when I install a higher stall torque converter. I've started to feel the shifts get harder the last couple years (car is 8-9 years old, 108k miles). I changed the transmission fluid and it was a little smoother, but not like how it was when i bought the car.

as far as price, i have no idea.
