yact: impulse purchase...

if you look up "yact" you'll see a few other threads by me. well i finally bit the bullet, and on impulse at that. kind of a stupid thing to do generally speaking but it suits my needs/wants at the moment and i did pretty well. It's a third gen (85) iroc. 5-spd 305 highoutput, red ext/red int, t-top, mint condition body. a few little dinky things to fix.

He was asking $4420. I made the deal at $3495. 🙂 Apparently it was evaluated well over $4500. He was just having a hard time selling it (not many calls). So, since there were one or two other people wanting to check it out soon and being interested.. I offered him $200 more than my original counter-offer for him to just let it go at that price right now. so we wrote up a contract. 🙂

got the vin # etc, and gonna get her inspected before I buy.

He was really attached to his car. 😛 he really didn't want to let it go at that price. thankfully we had others coaxing him.. mwahaha. the car has four wheel disc brakes compared to the 2disc/2drum that the other z28 had. this one has power seats, too. and the clutch felt right. the car ran amazingly considering it had a lot of mileage, although the engine was completely rebuilt apparently. i was expecting it to be a POS.

Future plans for the car:

paintjob - the paint already looks amazing but i might want to paint it black, but I'll see. i'll have all the little things fixed while this is done
engine/tranny - it's a 305 carb w/5-speed. it's ok, great for starters.. but furhter down the road I want to invest in an LT1/6spd swap. gonna be pricey and time consuming. 🙂

I find the use of 305 and HighOutput in the same sentence to be rather amusing.....the LT1 will be much better. Good luck with the project. I am about to install a LS1/6 spd into a 65 Chevelle for a friend....that should be interesting also.

I've heard of some pretty fast 305s so I don't see what's amusing about that.

I've seen "high output" on a 2.8L V6, so you tell me what's amusing. 😛

Ehh... $3500 for a car that's THAT old... with CARBS??? Ick... you could have gotten a very nice mid-90s LT1 Camaro Z28 for just a tad more!! :Q
I can understand paying that much for a rare Mustang SVO in good shape (simple 11second street car/9 second trailer queen) but not an IROC-Z!

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! 🙁

he could have had one of a 1000 different cars, but this one cought his eye, and it's good for him.....be glad for the guy!

Your concept of fast must be different than the rest of us since the 305 is a crap motor by most people's judgement.......Chevy people too. The LT1 is a great idea, I know someone who made the swap and it is awesome.

What's your idea of fast? 8-9s 1/4mile? IMO that's just ridiculous. I consider anything 14 and under to be pretty decent, but I don't really know what I'm talking about when it comes to that. Anyway I was just saying I'd heard of plenty of 305s that ran sweet times so it can't be that aweful of a motor.

As for the money ... ummm yeah I've been shopping for many months now and this is one of the best deals available at the moment. What other car d oyou think I could have gotten? 4th gens are going for $15-40k here. There is NO way in HELL I could have gotten a "mid 90s 4th gen for just a TAD more". Simply impossible. The CHEAPEST 4th gen I could find was CAD$8500, and it was sold already when I called. I have found no more under $10-12k. That's a huge jump up.

edit: concerning the LT1 swap I know it's a good idea but that's far down the line, way too much $$ for now. right now I just want to fix up the few little things, paint it black possibly, and then save up for the LT1 swap which will take FOREVER 🙁

I know a 305 that has over 300,000 miles on it and still going.

Not going fast, or was it ever, but still going. 😛

I'm not knocking your car dude. I think you got a great deal if it is in the shape you say. I remember back in 1985 when a buddy of mine came home with a brand new IROC. Just don't waste a lot of money trying to mod the 305. Save your pennies for either a regular decent 350 or the LT1. The reason most Chevy guys don't like the 305 is the 350 does everything better and gets about the same gas mileage.

I'm not saying you were knocking it. Anyway I had no intentions whatsoever of modding the 305. I'm going to put the car 100% original, and if I'm happy with it I'll keep it till I can swap a 6spd LT1 or whatever in.
