YACT: If your car had transmission problems...

Diamond Member
I am VERY close to a Midas station, but I'm wary of taking it there. I could probably make it to a dealer as well, but I'd be as likely to be bent over there as at Midas.

The only place I trust is around 45 minutes away, and with the transmission slipping as bad as it is, I doubt I'd make it there. But I know they'd do good work and give me a good price for it.

What do you recommend?

bah, hells no. I'd do my damndest to get use of the lift at my friends place of work... and get him to do it 😛 but seriously.. ask around to see if anyone knows anyone good.

i've heard sketchy things about aamco.

take it to the place that's 45 min away.

if the transmission dies, get a tow truck.

go where you trust. it's silly to take it somewhere you might regret that you're spending too much for inferrior service.

I took it to a friend's place and put in another tranny.. 😛

See who your friends recommend and have used..don't just go for whoever you happen to find. 🙂

I heard the regular chain stores were good, but the franchise stores were luck of the draw. But I figured they are transmission specialists so they should know a thing or two.

If its only $45 miles away just pay a tow truck $50 or whatever to get your car towed 45 miles to the place you trust.

I don't really trust Midas and would rather go to the dealership. In my experience going to a dealership for BIG jobs usually is the same price as at most independant shops, unless you know the owner/are a regular and he cuts you a break (or is atleast more honest with the hours).

aren't there any other regional Transmission specialists by where you live? look in the phone book.

What kind of transmission is it? If it's a standard and it's just the clutch slipping you might possibly be able to make it, considering there aren't large hills on the route and
the clutch still has some life in it. If it's an automatic, what's the fluid level like? I assume you've checked that?

Fluid level is fine, but I think it might be the filter blocking too much from going through. I'm just worried that as bad as it is, I might do too much damage taking it ANYWHERE right now.

the dealership, its where i always take my car whenever it has an issue, why woudl i take it someplace else if it had a tranny issue

Jiffy Lube.

More serious answer:
Before you do anything check the oil level in the transmission. Mine did slip a bit (nothing serious) and it turned out to be a bit low.
New fluids and problem was gone.

Dealer or reputable independent mechanic. I wouldn't take a car into Midas or Aamco to have the tire pressures checked.

Well, ATX filter replacement usually isn't that big of a deal as far as mechanical skills go. Any shop with any ASE certified mechanic's could do this no problem, including the diagnosis. Good luck, hope it is just the filter. Have it towed, 40 bucks for towing beats 1000 bucks for a new ATX.

I would also recommend a mechanic or shop you trust. If needed have it towed there instead of risking additional damage to the transmission.

I had a tranmission go once... I asked around and took it to a local transmission shop that was highly recommended.

And they did good work, and about 2/3'rds the price of the dealer.

They ended up replacing it with a "rebuilt" one.

3 Months later the same problem started happening again.

I took it to a dealer (prayed that the problem wouldn't show itself while they were inspecting it) and traded it in.

Been owned by car dealers ever since. Someday I won't have a car payment... I may be 80 at that time 🙂 ...but at some point I will not have a car payment.
